The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a senior geotechnical engineer to join our innovative and collaborative team of 90+ geotechnical engineers and geologists. In this hybrid role, you will play a crucial role in geotechnical and civil projects through site investigations, design and analysis, project management, and reporting and documentation. This role also involves mentorship and leadership of other team members, while interfacing with clients and multidisciplinary teams.

To be successful in this position, the ideal candidate has a strong knowledge of a variety of geotechnical analysis of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and groundwater flow. The person in this position will work on a variety of geotechnical projects that involve traditional geotechnical and civil analysis and design related to foundations, slope stability, seepage, bearing capacity, settlement, and earth retention with an emphasis on highly technical analysis and design of complex slopes, dams, and foundations. They are flexible in working with their project teams and are willing to occasionally modify schedules to meet project deadlines and/or client needs. This person is also relationship-focused, as the role involves serving both internal and external clients.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Project leadership: oversee engineering investigation and design support tasks from the conceptual phase through design with an emphasis on advanced analyses, testing, and numerical modeling. Serve as the technical lead and point of contact for clients and internal team members. Develop project scopes, schedules, and budgets.

  • Field tasks: oversee and conduct field investigations; perform site characterization and soil classification when needed.

  • Technical analysis: oversee and review the preparation of project plans and specifications, reports, and cost estimates. Conduct slope stability, settlement, and bearing capacity analyses.

  • Geotechnical and civil analysis: complete design related to shallow and deep foundations, slope stability and stabilization, seepage, bearing capacity, earth retention, and dams.

  • Reporting and documentation: prepare technical reports, proposals, and design recommendations.

  • Team and client engagement: serve as a mentor and leader for other team members. Collaborate with civil, structural, and environmental teams. Support business development and proposal writing.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: Anticipated range of $105,000-130,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Work location: A hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Fort Collins, Colorado, office, with the expectation to visit the Barr office location at least one day per month.

  • Travel expectation: up to 20 percent domestic fieldwork, with an average of two days continuous job site presence.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in geotechnical engineering or civil engineering with geotechnical emphasis. Graduate degree in geotechnical engineering (MS) is preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one is preferred.

  • Experience: 10+ years of related experience.

  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel.

  • Technical skills: experience in the investigation, design, and construction of foundations and embankments. Proficiency with drilling methods, field testing, and laboratory procedures.

  • Software: geotechnical software programs, including Geostudio, Rocscience, LPile, APile, gINT or BoreDM, or FLAC.

  • Business development: proven history of developing a portfolio of business and providing exceptional client service. Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.
