Job Description

The Senior Engineer shall provide subject matter expertise and engineering services to meet Project and Program (Contract- and Grant-funded) needs through collaborative work on relevant technical areas to demonstrate program(s) success promptly while ensuring high-quality output.

Roles

  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) - solid-state high-voltage pulsed-power technologies and devices.
  • Contributor/collaborator on overall pulse generator design, operation, integration with other pulser topologies, and improving the SOTA on both fundamental and applied research.
  • Technical lead on R&D of non-linear transmission lines, e.g., G-NLTLs, based on the needs of the team and metrics of success identified by the projects/programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct original and innovative research in solid-state pulsed-power systems advancing the state-of-the-art through collaboration with the pulse generator team per the needs of the project/program.
  • Participate and contribute within regular meetings with team leaders, members, and students for project updates.
  • Collaborate with other research institutions and companies for research collaborations to push the boundaries of pulsed-power systems.
  • Track project milestones, key deliverables, and timelines; communicate with the team and team-lead if/when bottlenecks or difficulties are incurred which otherwise alter the progress of the individual research or team's progress to meet the goals/deliverables of the project(s).
  • Prepare and submit regular monthly and quarterly project/status reports as required by sponsor, supervisor and/or institution.
  • Disseminate the research findings through IP disclosures, patents, internal reports, publishing in journals, and presenting at conferences.
  • Support and contribute on proposals to secure independent funding from various sources within the scope of MIDE at the behest of unit leadership.
  • Act as one of the technical points of contact for physics, material science, device characterizations as appropriate within MIDE.
  • Participate in professional development activities, attend conferences, workshops, engaging with industry leaders, and keeping abreast of scientific literature.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Quantitative Goals

  • Demonstrate project success by working towards PTERA-Grant and other MIDE programs and meeting milestones on time. Specifically, provide/demonstrate the theory, simulation, and empirical validation of a/multiple G-NLTLs which can:
  • Achieve a voltage modulation depth of > 50%, and handle 100-kV impulses continuously
  • Fit within a Group-II UAS, < 2-ft long, < 5 lbs.
  • Generate oscillations with frequency content of 500-MHz to 1-GHz, 1-2 GHz, and 2-4 GHz.
  • Explore the shared-ferritic-core concept such that multiple NLTLs are embedded within shared gyromagnetic core to allow for frequency/bandwidth selection from a single input.
  • Submission of > 95% of all technical reports, MSRs, QSRs, conference slides, and other information on/before their respective deadlines.
  • Prepare independently, with co-authors, or work with graduate students to publish at least one journal paper per year.

Note: this position is 100% grant funded and contingent on continued funding.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated professional experience with engineering design for RF.
  • Demonstrated professional experience with pulse power systems, electronic simulations, and high voltage.
  • Capacity to attain and maintain US security clearance preferred.
