Position Description

The Massive Data Institute (MDI) and the Department of Computer Science seek a postdoctoral fellow to join a project that focuses on responsible AI innovation. The project is led by Tadayoshi Kohno, a professor of computer science at Georgetown University. The postdoctoral fellow will be part of a cross-institute collaboration between Computer Science (CS), Center for Digital Ethics (CDE), and the Massive Data Institute (MDI). The postdoctoral fellow will be housed at both CS and MDI. Applicants should have a PhD in computer science with an emphasis on AI systems, vulnerabilities, vulnerability mitigation, and responsible use.

We seek a postdoctoral fellow with interests in addressing pressing challenges at the intersection of emerging AI technologies, security & privacy, and technology-facilitated harms. The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with Professor Kohno in analyzing AI systems, writing and publishing research papers, meeting with interested colleagues and students, and mentoring junior scholars. The fellow will also support Professor Kohno's overall efforts in AI security & privacy and responsible use.

Research

Fellows are expected to engage in their own advanced independent and/or directed research with colleagues and engage in projects with the faculty that are part of the Massive Data Institute and the Department of Computer Science. The Fellow will also look for opportunities to collaborate with faculty and practitioners in other parts of Georgetown and is expected to give at least one seminar presentation based on his/her work while a fellow. In addition, the Postdoctoral fellow will assist the Professors by helping build a community across campus and helping supervise students working at this intersection.

Teaching

Fellows will teach a tutorial about AI system vulnerabilities, vulnerability mitigations, and responsible use each semester. In addition, the fellow will contribute to the intellectual life of the Computer Science Department and the Massive Data Institute.

Fellowships are a temporary advanced scholarly appointment for a 12-month appointment to begin in the Spring 2026 semester. The candidate will have a temporary advanced scholarly appointment beginning January 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026, with the possibility of renewal if funding permits. The person hired in this position will receive a stipend of $75,000 - $80,000, a 1 of 2 travel allowance, and health insurance coverage. The Postdoctoral fellow will be provided working space.

The Massive Data Institute is an interdisciplinary center focusing on key public policy and analytic issues involving high-dimensional data. It is the expectation that the postdoctoral fellows will assist in building relationships across disciplines and departments within the University. Further, MDI has budding partnerships with numerous external agencies and the fellows will be involved in conversations and interactions with potential partners.
