Position description

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a lecturer in data science, with a focus on quantitative methods and computational approaches in linguistics, with a starting date in January 2026. The successful candidate will teach a range of undergraduate, and occasionally graduate, courses, including but not limited to statistical methods in linguistics, digital humanities, data science for linguistics, computational linguistics, and academic writing in the humanities and social sciences.

The lecturer will play a key role in expanding the department's offerings in data-driven and interdisciplinary approaches to language, as well as foundational and introductory courses in linguistics.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

A PhD in Linguistics, Computational Linguistics, or closely related field

Preferred qualifications

1) Evidence of successful teaching in higher education.

2) Demonstrated record of bridging teaching and research, for example by integrating open science practices or research-driven projects into undergraduate courses.

3) Demonstrated practical knowledge of quantitative methods in usage-based linguistics.

4) Experience developing and maintaining software tools or research databases.

5) Experience applying advanced data science techniques (e.g., statistical modeling, geospatial analysis, machine learning) to language research.
