Job Purpose

Straughan Environmental, Inc. is currently seeking a recent graduate with a passion for geospatial technology to join our GIS & Technology Team as a GIS Intern. In this role, you will gain valuable hands-on experience supporting real-world environmental, engineering, and planning projects alongside a team of GIS Analysts, Environmental Scientists, Planners, and Engineers.

This internship is a great opportunity for a motivated self-starter to begin their professional GIS career in a dynamic consulting environment. We ask that the intern be available to work in-person at our Columbia, MD office at least two days per week. Weekly hours may vary from 0 to 40 depending on project needs and availability.

Compensation for this position is $22

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with georeference and digitization of materials into a standardized geodatabase.
  • Create, convert, integrate, and manage raster and vector datasets and associated metadata for projects.
  • Follow standard operating procedures and ensure consistent data formatting.
  • Perform QA/QC of datasets and documentation based on standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare components of technical reports under senior staff guidance.
  • Support field data collection efforts, assessments, and surveys as needed.
  • Ability to work full workdays.
  • Contribute to multiple concurrent projects in an organized and detail-oriented manner.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Ability to work in a hybrid in-person/virtual work environment.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs
Requirements

Qualifications

Education: Recent graduate with Bachelors in Geography, GIS, or a related field

Experience:

  • One year or less full-time work experience
  • Relevant coursework, labs, and research projects
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro 3
  • Familiarity with and understanding of cartography, projections and coordinate systems, georeferencing, digitization, topology, and general best practices
  • Working knowledge of MS Office computer software (World/Excel/PowerPoint/Outlook)
  • Strong verbal, organizational, and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience and interest in emerging technologies
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS Online, Experience Builder, FieldMaps, and Survey 123
  • Familiarity with Esri Model Builder and/or familiarity in GIS programming with Python and ArcPy suite of tools
  • Familiarity with Maryland iMap and other publicly available data sources
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, and/or MicroStation
