Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Museum is seeking a full-time Associate Dean of Science Administration, to lead budgeting, finance and operations processes for the Museum's Science division. Reporting to the Provost, with a high degree of autonomy, they direct personnel processes for Science and support strategy, planning and special projects. This position requires outstanding organizational, communication, interpersonal, collaboration and leadership skills.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead budgeting and finances for the Museum's Science division:

    • In collaboration with the Provost, identify areas of high need.
    • Advise the Provost on resource allocations and identify funding for needs/initiatives.
    • Work with division chairs, department managers and the Office of Budget and Financial Planning throughout the year on annual budgets.
    • Monitor Science-wide budget for variances and manage year-end spenddown.
    • Directly manage the Office of the Provost's budget, including special funds.
    • Support divisions with miscellaneous financial analyses and fund projections.
    • Work directly with new curators (faculty) to manage their start-up funds.
    • Serve as a resource for divisional staff on the Museum's financial policy and processes.
    • Develop long-range projections and project budgets.



  • Lead personnel processes for the division:

    • Liaise with Human Resources on appropriate salary ranges and titles.
    • Supervise the salary increase process.
    • Support curator recruitment and searches.


  • Work on strategy, planning, policy and special projects:

    • Analyze current operational processes and performance, recommending solutions for improvement where necessary.
    • In collaboration with the Provost, identify and manage resources to support future directions and strategic projects.
    • In collaboration with Operations, identify and track the needs and status of Science facilities and capital projects.
    • Research policy at peer institutions and relevant institutional standards.
    • Generate analyses, documentation and plans for approved/proposed initiatives as directed by the Provost.


  • Liaise with other areas of the Museum on policy, planning and administration.
  • Support the Science division and administrative staff by disseminating information and developing tools.
  • Serve as a resource for divisional staff on Museum policy and processes.

The expected salary range for the Associate Dean of Science Administration is $160,000 annual - $185,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in science, public policy, business or another related field.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible financial, administrative and operations management experience in a similar, not-for-profit or academic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn and use multiple internal computer systems, particularly financial management software (e.g., Oracle, Orbit).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field.
Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
