Correctional Officer Sergeant


Department: Community Reintegration Center (CRC)


Full-time, Hourly


Hourly Range: $34.72 - $39.21/hr



Job Summary


The Sergeant position is the first line floor supervisor of the CRC security staff. Sergeants are assigned a specific floor location where they must perform a minimum of 2 tours per housing unit per shift. Sergeants respond to all disturbance calls and medical emergencies in the facility. Daily responsibilities include the following: monitoring the safety and security of staff and residents, report writing, and disciplinary orders.



Work Schedule:
The CRC is a 24/7 department which includes positions to work on 1st, 2nd and 3rd shift. Sergeants will be required to work 40 hours per week plus overtime which includes weekends and holidays.



Job Responsibilities



  • Facility Tours - Sergeants are the first line supervisor, a Sergeant must tour the assigned areas 2 times per shift making sure all safety and security needs are met. While touring the Sergeant is also responsible for breaking officers and responding to resident questions and needs.
  • Staff Development - Mentor and train staff assigned to their area by ensuring that staff is aware of and fluent in policies and procedures. Discipline officers when necessary (issue counseling EADs) and recognize superior performance when appropriate by issuing positive EADs.
  • Decision Making - Sergeants assign Correctional Officers their daily duties on the floor. Makes decisions on residents in the housing units and when to administer discipline or send residents to segregation. Makes decisions on maintenance issues or general safety concerns.
  • Responds to Institutional Emergencies/Disturbances - Direct staff as necessary during a medical emergency making sure they obtain the right equipment, wheelchairs, flashlights, and/or fire extinguishers. Responds to physical altercations making sure any evidence is obtained including photos and/or video. Ensures medical needs are met.
  • Monitors Daily CMS Logging, RMS Reporting and CMS Violations - While touring the Sergeant must check the Correctional Officer daily logs and CMS violations. Ensures written resident discipline and any RMS reports for medical emergencies, fights or injuries.
  • Resident Movement - Sergeants are the first line supervisors and are responsible for resident movement within the facility. Sergeants monitor the floor regarding recreation, visitations, health center and Huber. Makes decisions on when master control needs to stop movement.
  • Equipment and Door Checks - Sergeants tour and check to make sure all doors are secure and advise master control if anything was secure or unsecure. Sergeants also check all the equipment in their area like wheelchairs, flashlights and AEDs to ensure the items are functional and in place.
  • Ability to properly and safely operate: county vehicles, tasers, OC sprays, radios, handcuffs, keys, computers and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; ability to push and pull up to 100 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Required Education, License/Certification and Experiences



  • Current residency within the State of Wisconsin upon application required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License required and must be maintained throughout incumbency
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalency required
  • One (1) year or more of work experience in a Correctional Officer role required
  • Law Enforcement Standards Board (LESB) certification required
  • CPR certification required
  • Intermediate knowledge of all related computer and software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Teams required



Preferred Education, License/Certification and Experiences



  • Previous work experience in a Supervisory or Management role preferred
  • Associate degree or higher in Criminal Justice or closely related field preferred
  • Previous experience with software applications such CMS, RMS, Livescan or Morpho ID preferred
