Program Overview

An internship with Securian Financial means an opportunity to create meaningful connections with established associates and fellow interns while exploring professional development in your field of study. Our interns are connected to work that matters, helping to drive and deliver value for our customers with the support of great Securian team members at your side. You'll have the opportunity to interact with company leaders and learn from their career stories as well as get to know more about who we are as a company and the things we value - like our commitment to community through hands-on volunteer activities. At Securian, supportive leaders facilitate an environment where interns are provided mentoring and learning resources to acclimate them into the workspace. Teams work collaboratively to achieve milestones and improvements. Personal growth and development opportunities are prioritized and recognized. We encourage and celebrate involvement in Associate Resource Groups around various Diversity & Inclusion initiatives.Interns in technology will be placed in one of three possible tracks indicated below.

Summer internships are intended for undergraduate students graduating in December '26 or May '27. We are unable to pursue candidates who would require Visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities will vary by role but could include:

Software Engineering

  • Design, develop, test, debug, and maintain new and existing systems as a member of an agile delivery team.

  • Create engaging customer experiences while ensuring solutions meet performance and quality standards.

  • Collaborate with team members through peer reviews to maintain team quality and standards.

Data & ML Engineering

  • Harness the power of AI-based job aids and modern platforms to enhance innovation, efficiency, and data-driven solutions.

  • Engage with users and vendors to execute technology proof of concepts that validate use cases and demonstrate the value of new solutions.

  • Onboard new platforms and tools to ensure data and ML solutions are effectively adopted across the organization.

Cybersecurity

  • Contribute to the engineering and operations of solutions that protect applications, computer networks, and systems.

  • Safeguard customer data by designing and implementing secure technology solutions.

  • Collaborate with peers to review and maintain cybersecurity standards across delivery teams.

Professional Development (Included in all tracks)

  • Partner with coaches and leaders to identify and execute skill development opportunities and network connections.

  • Discover professional career paths and validate personal growth journeys.

Key technologies will vary by role but could include:

  • Back-End Development (Java, Python, Spring Framework, REST APIs, Junit)

  • Web Development (JavaScript, NodeJS, Bootstrap, React)

  • Data Engineering (Snowflake, StreamSets)

  • Cloud - AWS (EC2, Serverless, Lambdas, EKS, Security)

  • AI - (ChatGPT, M365 CoPilot, GitHub CoPilot, Textract, Bedrock)

  • Versioning and Deployment (GitHub, Puppet)

  • Productivity (Jira, ServiceNow, MSOffice Suite)

Qualifications:

  • Creativity and resourcefulness to problem solve both independently and as part of a team.

  • Sound analytical and design skills to understand and apply technical concepts.

  • Excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work both independently, and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with team members.

  • Curiosity to pursue learning opportunities and further self-development.

  • Currently pursuing a four-year degree with a major in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Mathematics, Business Administration, Engineering, Physical Sciences, or related degree preferred.

Securian Financial believes in hybrid work as an integral part of our culture. Associates get the benefit of working both virtually and in our offices. If you're within a commutable distance (90 minutes) you'll join us 3 days each week in our offices to collaborate and build relationships. Our policy allows flexibility for the reality of business and personal schedules.
