Job Title: Head Golf Professional

Pay Range: $37.49/hourly - $45.00/hourly

Position Summary: The Head Golf Professional is responsible for overseeing daily golf operations with a focus on delivering high-quality customer service, managing tee time reservations, and ensuring the efficient operation of the golf shop and guest services. This role supports the mission of the Aspen Golf Club by promoting an accessible, affordable, and inclusive golf experience. The Head Golf Professional is expected to maintain high standards of professionalism and foster a welcoming environment for both staff and patrons.

Supervision Exercised and Received: This position provides direct supervision to Golf Guest Services staff, Golf Pro Shop Specialists, Assistant Golf Professionals, the Outside Service Manager, and the Golf Shop Manager. The Head Golf Professional works in close collaboration with the Golf Course Superintendent. Both positions report directly to the Golf Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

Golf Operations Management

  • Oversees daily tee sheet operations to ensure availability, adherence to policies, and alignment with budget goals.

  • Coordinates and manages events, tournaments, and leagues to ensure a professional and enjoyable experience, utilizing tournament software and applying organizational policies.

  • Administers the rental club program and manages all aspects of practice facility operations and equipment.

  • Maintains a strong, visible presence with passholders and staff, supporting positive guest relations and daily operations.

  • Acts as a primary point of contact for customer concerns, marketing initiatives, and public relations efforts.

  • Retail and Inventory Oversight

  • Directs purchasing, merchandising, pricing, and inventory control within the golf shop.

  • Maintains accurate records, develops reports and forecasts, manages budgets, and enforces cash control and security procedures.

  • Oversees payroll administration and reporting for golf retail and operations staff.

Golf Cart Fleet Management

  • Maintains documentation for the cart fleet, schedules repairs, enforces safety protocols, and participates in replacement planning and budgeting.

  • Manages Golf Cart GPS systems and related technology.

Instruction Support

  • Coordinates daily instructional needs and supports teaching professionals. May provide instruction outside of regular working hours, in accordance with the City's agreement with the Golf Instruction Academy.

  • Leadership and Supervision

  • Leads a team by setting clear expectations, providing performance feedback, recognizing contributions, and encouraging development and training.

  • Ensures accountability, resolves conflicts, and promotes a high standard of professionalism and service.

  • Supervises: Assistant Golf Professional, Golf Shop Manager, Pro Shop Staff, Outside Services, and Starters/Player Assistants.

Software and Systems Knowledge

  • Proficient in tee sheet and POS systems, website content updates, scheduling and payroll platforms, golf cart GPS systems, and tournament software (e.g., Golf Genius).

  • Safety: Knowledge of safety policies, procedures, and strategies relevant to the Golf Department.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Golf Course Management, Recreation, or related degree.

Experience: Experience as a Class A1 Head Professional or a minimum of 3 years as a Class B 1st Assistant Golf Professional.

Technical & Industry Knowledge:

Technology: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook is required. Must have a working knowledge of computer-based systems, including website management, tee sheet management systems, point-of-sale (POS) software, driving range systems, GHIN handicapping, and tournament management systems.

Golf Instruction and Club Repair: Basic knowledge of golf instruction techniques and golf club repair is required.

Course Marking and Tournament Setup: Must be able to accurately mark the golf course and prepare it for daily play and special events.

Rules of Golf: Thorough understanding of the Rules of Golf is required. This position will serve as a rules official for tournaments and events.

Licenses & Certifications: Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge, and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.

Preferred Candidate: Previous experience in a mountain resort golf course.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

Position Type and Work Hours:

  • This is a temporary position with a 40-hour work week for approximately 7 months during the golf season.

  • During the winter months, work will be intermittent and based on operational needs.

  • This position may be eligible for health insurance benefits.

  • Additional hours may be required during peak season, and the employee may be called in for emergencies related to equipment or systems critical to golf facility operations.

Work Environment:

  • Indoors: Office environment in a golf pro shop.

  • Outdoors/Off-Site: Outdoor recreational golf facilities. Position will be exposed to outdoor working conditions in all types of weather. Will attend meetings, trainings, and conferences at a variety of city facilities and areas.
