Job Description

We seek a skilled and safety-conscious Structural Lab Technician to join our Civil Engineering Department on a part-time basis (25 hours per week). This position is located in the High-Bay Structural Laboratory at the School of Science and Engineering (SSE), University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on technician who is passionate about supporting structural research and large-scale experimental testing. As a vital member of our lab team, you will work closely with researchers, faculty, and students to ensure the smooth, efficient, and safe operation of structural testing and fabrication activities.

Key Responsibilities include the following:

  • Assist in Setting up and conducting large-scale structural tests
  • Operate and maintain specialized lab equipment, including: (required training will be provided)
    • Hydraulic systems
    • Load frames
    • Data acquisition systems
  • Perform machining, welding, and cutting tasks to fabricate custom test fixtures and components
  • Operate forklifts and heavy equipment to assist with material handling and test setup
  • Ensure strict adherence to lab safety protocols and maintain a safe working environment
  • Provide technical assistance to researchers and students during experiments
  • Interpret technical drawings and contribute to the design and implementation of structural tests (if needed)
Qualifications

  • Diploma, or related experience in digital controls (required training will be provided)
  • Hands-on experience with machining, welding, cutting, and operating mechanical systems
  • Forklift and heavy equipment operation certification or experience (required training will be provided)
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Structural testing (required training will be provided if needed)
    • Laboratory safety protocols
    • Excellent teamwork and communication skills
Anticipated Hiring Range

The hourly pay starts at $30/hr
