Job Description: Underground Construction Engineer
Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Underground Construction Engineer to oversee and manage the construction of complex water and wastewater facilities. The successful candidate will serve as a key member of the project management team, coordinating with superintendents, foremen, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and other construction engineering professionals. This role requires strong technical expertise, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple aspects of underground construction projects to ensure successful and timely completion.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage construction activities for underground water and wastewater facilities from initiation to completion.
  • Collaborate closely with superintendents, foremen, inspectors, subcontractors, suppliers, and internal project teams to ensure project goals are achieved.
  • Prepare, review, and manage submittals and Requests for Information (RFIs) to ensure compliance with project requirements.
  • Track, verify, and document all quantities of work performed, ensuring cost control and accurate reporting.
  • Develop, negotiate, and manage change orders to minimize risk and maintain project profitability.
  • Update and monitor construction schedules, identifying potential delays and recommending corrective actions.
  • Oversee construction methods and materials to ensure adherence to engineering standards, specifications, and safety regulations.
  • Prepare as-built drawings and maintain accurate project documentation for project closeout.
  • Proactively identify issues and develop solutions to maintain progress and quality on the job site.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in complex water and wastewater construction projects, with a strong background in underground utilities.
  • Proficiency in construction project management software, scheduling tools, and cost tracking systems.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulatory requirements for underground construction.


Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Office and field-based responsibilities with frequent visits to construction sites.
    * Ability to work in varying weather conditions and underground environments.
    * Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. and navigate uneven terrain as required.
