Job Summary:




Designs, develops and implements industrial machinery and equipment, tools, dies, gauges, jigs, fixtures, prototype model productions and machine attachments required for production or experimental use, considering such factors as accessibility, economy, mobility and performance requirements. May use CATIA and/or additional platforms to design and control tools and tooling.

Under minimal direction, supports manufacturing in its entirety and various linked departments in evaluating, developing, planning, coordinating, directing and improving tool fabrication processes. Facilitates all tool fabrication activities from design to fabrication, including make or buy. Supports Manufacturing Engineering during tool selection, including during quoting process. Supports Tool Control, Plaster Shop and tool property functions in outside process activities, including vendor search, selection and certification.




Essential Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Plans and performs complex tool engineering assignments on a variety of production lines to manufacture company products.
  • Participates in quotation proposals by supporting manufacturing concepts in conjunction with interested company members to establish efficient and cost effective fabrication tooling that will make the products, in accordance with prescribed engineering, quality and customer requirements.
  • Participates in product and process development and design reviews, approves all tool design drawings and provides for smooth transfer into production. Supports, coordinates and advises on establishing and/or application of methods, material and equipment.
  • Researches and establishes manufacturing requirements for tooling including cost estimates. Decides upon make or buy decisions for tooling.
  • Approves completed tool designs for fabrication.
  • Maintains requisite liaison with internal personnel and suppliers regarding tooling activity.
  • Researches, investigates and makes recommendations with regards to tool and related equipment suppliers.
  • Conducts cost analysis on tooling per project or program and conducts other special investigations as required.
  • Furnishes tooling guidance to Manufacturing Engineer and Tool Designer engaged in tool planning, design and distribution and supports maintaining control records on tooling.
  • Performs various other duties such as acting as consultant to Tool Design department; providing forecasts for capital spending for tooling; cooperating with materials review on disposition of tooling; maintaining awareness of developments in his field and making recommendations to his supervisors accordingly.


  • Conducts and participates in Lean Manufacturing activities, including 6S and Kaizen events.

Education and Experience





  • Associate's degree from a two-year college or university, or two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience
