The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Department of Biological Sciences is seeking a Research Staff Assistant to work in a laboratory studying the dynamic realm of mRNA processing and gene expression. The Research Staff Assistant supports ongoing experiments in molecular biology/biochemistry, studying mechanisms of gene expression and how errors in synthesis in mRNA lead to human diseases.

This role is contingent on continuous funding.

Responsibilities



  • Cultures human cell types and performing tissue culture assays.
  • Performs DNA, RNA, and protein isolation and, via sequencing, PCR or Western blot as appropriate.
  • Treats cells with various compounds and assists researchers in analyzing cells for changes in growth and gene expression.
  • Manages ordering of reagents, chemicals, and maintaining stock of laboratory necessities.
  • Ensures the laboratory is up to safety standards and abides by Columbia's Environmental Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned/requested.


Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree required in Biology or a related field.
  • Minimum (1) year of experience in a research environment.


Preferred Qualifications



  • 1+ yrs of lab experience, including cell culture and protein/RNA analysis beyond college preferred.
