Position Summary

Supervises "Underground Engineering" multiple employees who perform conceptual and detailed designs for the installation or replacement of electric utility distribution facilities. Assists in determining the layout and equipment necessary for the job in accordance with design standards. Reviews design work packages for accuracy and quality before release to construction. Ensures as-builts are entered in a timely manner upon completion of construction and performs QA/QC in GIS to complete the design process.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Distributes and assigns projects to ensure appropriate distribution of work based on resource availability.
  • Monitors work request progress according to due dates.
  • Maintains requested completion dates in all necessary systems.
  • Ensures proper application of construction and design standards.
  • Reviews design sketches for accuracy, quality, and compliance with design standards.
  • Provides technical support and training to design staff across multiple areas.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with peers and other areas on related work requests, field visits, and ROW reviews.
  • Assists with external contractor management and reviews invoicing.
  • Mitigates escalated issues from internal and external customers.
  • Enforces company policies.
  • Conducts performance appraisals.
  • Fosters a Zero Harm safety culture within the department.
  • Performs other duties and manages other projects as assigned.


Minimum Skills
Minimum Knowledge and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the design of three phase and single-phase electric utility distribution systems, including streetlights, to support system growth, reliability, asset management, and civic improvement..
Ability to review electric design sketches for accuracy, quality, and compliance with design standards.
Ability to effectively lead and provide direct supervision, performance management, and employee development.
Ability to apply critical thinking when reviewing and assessing technical information.
Ability to organize and prioritize time, work flow, and resources.
Ability to develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external customers.
Experience designing in GIS/Designer.
Demonstrated well-developed written and verbal communication skills for interaction within the section, across departmental lines to all levels of personnel and vertically with management.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, and Power Point)
Possess a valid Texas driver's license with a history of a safe driving record in accordance with CPS Energy policies, procedures, safety standards and applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree
  • Experience with Microstation, Work Manager, and SAP
  • Knowledge of NESC, IEEE, IES, NEC and RUS standards
  • Knowledge of utility system operations and construction
  • Knowledge of CPS Energy's Electric Service Standards

High School Diploma or GED
Required Certifications
Working Environment
Indoor work, operating computer, manual dexterity, talking, hearing, repetitive motion. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions or other business related events. After hours work may be required. Work schedule may vary and occasional overtime may be required.
May be required to cover on-call duty. Requires on-site construction visits and coordination.
Physical Demands
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Frequent construction site visits, which may require walking across rough, undeveloped terrain.
