Overview

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world's leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world's deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems.

The Thomas lab in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division is seeking a Senior Staff Scientist to manage its efforts in immune repertoire functional profiling.

The aim of this research program is the broad functional characterization of immune repertoires in human health and disease. This includes determining the functional role of lymphocyte populations across the life span, in tissues, and under diverse conditions of stress and disease including infections and cancer. In-depth studies of "unconventional" lymphocyte populations will be a focus of the program.

In this role the incumbent will manage junior scientists and trainees by assisting in the development of their research projects, troubleshooting problems, and helping prepare manuscripts. Primary experimental research and computational analysis, including algorithm development, will be integrated throughout the program. Managing collaborations with other research programs within and outside of the lab will be necessary.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage the interdisciplinary team of scientists focused on immune repertoire function in health and disease.
  • Develop new research protocols, techniques, and procedures for characterizing immune responses and manipulating, improving, or inhibiting their function.
  • Identify, process, organize, interpret, review and report relevant experimental data.
  • Monitor data collection and entry methods to meet quality standards.
  • Present research to colleagues within and outside the institution; publish as co-author and draft sections of research manuscripts.
  • Guide optimal lab operations.
  • Regularly train and oversee the work of others in laboratory techniques and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • PhD with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proven performance in a comparable role.
  • Experience in experimental and computational analyses of immune receptor repertoires, including High Throughput Sequencing (HTS) library preparation protocol development and optimization, molecular cloning, and mammalian tissue culture.
  • Driven individual capable of creative independent research, as demonstrated by first author publication(s) and presentations.
  • Exceptional multi-tasking and project management skills.
  • Superior written communication skills, as demonstrated by successful applications for external funding.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working with relevant lab protocols.
  • Prior experience in molecular biology/genomics/cancer biology/high-throughput sequencing.
  • Well organized with strong attention to detail.
  • A background in immune responses to infectious diseases.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $94,037 to $212,035, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.

This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.
