Job Summary


The anticipated duration of this assignment is 3 months.

The Medical Assistant Float supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care in multiple Cancer Center infusion units across UCSF Health. This role offers the opportunity to work in a variety of oncology infusion settings, collaborating with nurses, providers, and administrative staff to ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care.

Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse and in accordance with Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, the Medical Assistant performs a range of clinical and administrative tasks, including direct patient care, laboratory procedures, and coordination of services. This position requires flexibility to float between locations and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Care

  • Obtain and document patient-reported information, vital signs, height, weight, pain scores, and chief complaints.
  • Ensure interpreter services are utilized and documented when needed.
  • Assist with medication reconciliation, preparation for exams/procedures, and complex specialty procedures (e.g., Laser, TRUS, Colposcopy, Anoscopy, IRC).
  • Perform sterile processing (Cidex OPA) and maintain logs.
  • Transport patients safely and monitor patient flow.
  • Collect specimens, perform point-of-care testing (including EKGs, AccuChek), and follow lab handling protocols.
  • Maintain inventory of patient care amenities and assist with comfort measures (e.g., warm blankets, beverages).
  • Obtain authorizations for medications and referrals.
  • Comply with infection control, safety, and regulatory standards (JCAHO/Title 22).
Care Coordination & Communication
  • Collaborate with team members to support patient care and clinic operations.
  • Maintain professional communication with patients, families, and staff, following UCSF Telephone and House Standards.
  • Monitor and communicate provider delays.
  • Document in the Electronic Health Record (APEX) within the scope of a Medical Assistant, including vitals, patient history, allergies, POCT results, and order pends.
  • Schedule diagnostic and specialty services with provider orders.
Operational Support
  • Maintain clean, well-stocked exam rooms, labs, and supply areas.
  • Order and track supplies, maintain lab equipment, and ensure proper waste disposal.
  • Obtain insurance authorizations for medications, procedures, and diagnostic reviews.
  • Schedule complex procedures and coordinate patient services.
  • Participate in quality improvement and customer service initiatives.

Department Description

UCSF's Temporary Employment Program (TEP) recruits and hires temporary employees for immediate clerical and technical support services to UCSF Departments and various off-campus locations. UCSF departments deploy temporary employees to work on special projects, fill in for regular employees who are on vacation or leave, or to temporarily fill a vacant position during recruitment. Frequently temporary employees become successful candidates for career and limited appointment positions.

Required Qualifications


  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.
  • All candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Certificate of training or graduation from an accredited MA, Home Health Aide, PCA, CNA, dental or paramedic program, or college degree in a related field such as community health, infectious disease, public health, or health education, and 6 months of relevant experience
    • OR
    • 2 years of relevant experience as a Medical Assistant in a hospital or medical practice
  • Knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both directly and over the phone.
  • Able to meet physical requirements.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Prior experience in a healthcare setting working in an oncology practice
  • Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, medical assisting, or patient financial services strongly preferred.
  • Degree from accredited medical assisting school.
  • Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) strongly preferred.
  • Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1)

License/Certification


  • Current American Heart Association CPR Certification
