The MGB Vice President (VP) of Emergency Medicine provides system-wide leadership and management direction to support an integrated Emergency Medicine service across the system. The incumbent leads all functions required to coordinate emergency medicine services across the MGB system, including representing the Departments of Emergency Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), and Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital. In addition, the VP will work with the PCOOs at each community site to advance the integration of the community division emergency departments. The VP will work with the MGB Chair of Emergency Medicine to improve efficiencies and ensure that the strategic, operational, and financial goals of MGB Emergency Medicine are met. These activities will be coordinated with all critical stakeholders, including but not limited to physicians, APPs, nursing staff, and administration.
MGB Emergency Medicine is a major strategic service with several system-wide initiatives that will create synergies and efficiencies across MGB, including all MGB sites with emergency services. Enterprise Emergency Medicine will ensure the efficient and effective delivery of emergency care across MGB hospitals and advance strategic collaborations in clinical excellence, quality, and access. This position requires exceptional leadership ability, change management skills, and a collaborative approach to working in a large, complex system that includes both academic and community environments and diverse stakeholders in at least thirteen hospitals across the system.
The VP will report to the Mass General Brigham SVP Integration and Operations. They will also work closely with the COOs of the AMCs (Brigham and Women's and Mass General) and the PCOOs at each community site. The incumbent will also work in direct partnership with the MGB Chair of Emergency Medicine, nursing, and other essential leaders at each hospital for day-to-day activities.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides direct support to the MGB Chair of Emergency Medicine for advancing administrative aims at the AMCs and the community departments
  • Accountable for the AMC emergency medicine operations and administrative functions, working closely with the local leadership.
  • Provides system-wide leadership for MGB to integrate, coordinate, and consolidate emergency medicine services, maintaining constant focus on advancing the quality and consistency of care, while reducing costs and minimizing redundancies.
  • Develops and leads the implementation plan for new system-wide enterprise emergency medicine initiatives, including, but not limited to, standardization of care across the enterprise, developing standard measures and metrics, professional practice integration, billing and coding practices, and quality and safety initiatives.
  • Develops and implements the goals and objectives of MGB Emergency Medicine, in partnership with the MGB Chair and in conjunction with MGB leadership, the COOs, or their delegates, at the hospitals, and other key committees and stakeholders.
  • In conjunction with the Enterprise Emergency Medicine management team, ensures the high-quality delivery of emergency services across MGB.
  • Ensures that Regulatory/Compliance/Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement programs are active and meet as necessary and appropriate standards:
    • Ensures that MGB Emergency Medicine complies with all applicable federal regulations regarding clinical or research operations (e.g., Joint Commission, DPH, OSHA, fire safety code, etc.) and all applicable regulatory agencies regarding billing compliance issues (e.g., CMS, OIG, etc.).
    • Works collaboratively across the enterprise sites to assure high-quality, timely, and appropriate clinical services are provided to all patients.
    • Ensure that the sites are in a state of readiness for inspections by accrediting agencies such as the Joint Commission and the Department of Public Health.
  • Works closely with Emergency Medicine colleagues across the system on joint planning, cost savings, information technology, utilization guidelines, and other collaborative projects.
  • As required, represents emergency medicine in groups both within and outside the system, participating in meetings, serving on committees or task forces, etc.
  • Under the direction of the MGB Chair of Emergency Medicine, the SVP Integration and Operations, and the Brigham and Mass General COOs, performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A Master of Health Administration or Master of Business Administration is required.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of leadership experience in a complex healthcare system is required. Experience with clinical performance of emergency departments, as well as hospital emergency business management, is strongly preferred.
  • Deep knowledge of the MGB system and its institutions is preferred.
