Hiring Range
The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $66,700 - $83,400.
Job Closing Date

About the Job
Reporting to the Director of Student Billing and Cashiering Services, the Student Billing Supervisor receives work assignments subject to a moderate level of control and review. The incumbent provides direction to staff according to established policies and management guidance and administers policies that directly affect subordinate staff. They analyze and formulate strategies to resolve complex issues related to student accounts, along with interpreting policies and demonstrating solid subject matter knowledge with the student information system (SIS). They collaborate with IT and functional teams with the ability to test and validate system releases and identifies risks and responds accordingly. The incumbent is capable of prioritizing tasks balancing between administrative, system setup, and student support activities. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES FINANCIAL OPERATIONS
- Applies a high level of technical expertise to lead the development, implementation and/or maintenance of one or more systems in accordance with organization policies and procedures. Working with the Director, responsible for new semester setups in the Banner. Will work independently or as part of a team to gather and analyze student receivable data to ensure that student accounts are accurate. Prepares reports out of Cognos and Oracle and reconciles account balances, preparing financial journals as needed to contribute towards a timely monthly close. Ensures that appropriate internal controls are addressed, maintained and strengthened to protect University resources.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Provides a high quality of customer service and collaborates with enrollment management teams to ensure a seamless student experience. Effectively addresses difficult and complex student inquiries in coordination with support staff, for both UG and GR students. Recommends and implements quality customer service standards and procedures to affect various constituencies, including internal departments and UC Merced students and parents.
SUPERVISION
- Manages and directs the work of Financial Services Analysts. Leads staff in completing assignments using established guidelines, procedures and standards. Provides annual performance reviews of direct reports. Evaluates the workload of staff and rebalances as appropriate. Provides staff with career development, encouraging training and cross-training opportunities. Ensures staff are current with work requirements, policies and procedures. Trains staff members in campus systems applicable to their areas of responsibility, to include Banner, Oracle (GL, AR and reporting modules) Cognos, Transact, OnBase, and others.
ACCOUNTING & FINANCIAL SYSTEMS
- Applies advanced knowledge in accounting concepts and principles, local and system wide policies and procedures, to ensure the accuracy of financial data in the Banner Student AR System. Manages Banner process flow automation to include maintenance of the Automic system. In addition, participates in the analysis and design for new services or operational systems that have a critical university-wide impact.
DATA AND REPORTING
- Initiates and designs moderate to complex reports that allow management and key stakeholders to analyze and form decisions based on statistical data and industry trends. Analyze data to identify anomalies or shifting trends and be able to communicate results both verbally and in written form.
Qualifications
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in related area. (Required)
- Two years of progressively responsible related experience or six years of equivalent related experience/education. (Required)
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Has basic knowledge of financial transactions and financial systems such as Oracle.
- Must be proficient in use of Microsoft Office and common desktop/web applications.
- Strong inter-personal skills, service orientation, active listening, critical thinking, organizational skills and effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience managing student accounts.
- Knowledge of Banner Student Information System - Receivables Module. (Preferred)
- Ability to manage work through a ticketing system such as ServiceNow and Salesforce.
- Ability to work in a high volume environment with multiple support groups.
- Knowledge of policies related to application of Financial Aid to student accounts. (Preferred)
- Experience configuring business requirements into the student information system. (Preferred)
- Ability to run reports and analyze data. (Preferred)
