Job Description

1. Physical Abilities

The work a welder performs requires specific physical abilities. You need to be able to stand for long periods of time, because welding work is usually done standing up. You have to hold your welding torch in place for long periods, so you need stamina, excellent eye-hand coordination and steady hands. Able to lift and stoop to get these pieces around, and be capable of bending and twisting to assemble or disassemble pieces.

2. Math Skills

Often, you will have to read blueprints or interpret sketches, and math skills help with this.

Math skills can also help you have good spatial reasoning and understand two and three dimensional diagrams, which welders frequently need to do.

3. Attention to Detail

Welding is highly skilled labor and requires good attention to detail to do well. Welders need to notice if parts are corroded, cracked or otherwise damaged before fastening them into place. Understand what a cold weld is.

4. Inspection Tools

The ability to read and understand Ring gauges, Micrometers, Calipers and Bore Gages.

5. Welding Types.

Good knowledge of MIG and TIG welding. Arc welding

6. Qualifications

Specialized training at a high school, vocational school or community college or on the job training.

Knowledge of CNC machines would be a plus.
