Position Summary

The Vice President, Accounting & Controller is a key finance executive responsible for leading the organization's enterprise-wide accounting, treasury, accounts payable, and payroll functions. This role ensures the integrity of financial reporting, optimal liquidity management, and the efficient and compliant execution of core financial operations across MaineHealth. The VP will play a critical role in maintaining strong financial controls, fostering team development, and supporting system-wide financial planning and performance.

This role does not include responsibility for internal audit, external audit, or compliance functions.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

1. Education: Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.

2. License/Certifications: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.

3. Experience: Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible leadership experience in accounting or finance, with significant exposure to treasury, AP, and payroll.

4. Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Prior experience in a large healthcare or not-for-profit organization strongly preferred.

5. Additional Skills/Requirements Preferred: Proficient in ERP and financial systems (e.g., Infor, Workday, Oracle).

Essential Functions

1. Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting

  • Lead general ledger operations, ensuring accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes.
  • Oversee preparation of financial statements in compliance with GAAP and healthcare industry standards.
  • Partner with financial planning and operational teams to provide insights into financial results and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Responsible for all internal and external financial reporting.

2. Accounts Payable & Disbursements

  • Lead the accounts payable function to ensure accurate, timely, and compliant disbursement of funds to vendors.
  • Oversee vendor management processes, payment cycles, and adherence to internal policies and controls.
  • Implement continuous process improvements to enhance automation, accuracy, and vendor satisfaction.

4. Payroll Administration

  • Oversee payroll operations including time capture, payroll processing, employee tax withholdings, benefit deductions, and tax filings.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll laws and reporting requirements.
  • Support accurate integration with HRIS and financial systems, ensuring seamless employee and financial data flow.

5. Internal Controls & Policy Development

  • Establish and maintain strong internal control frameworks across accounting, payroll, AP, and treasury functions.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and applicable accounting standards.
  • Support readiness for financial audits and provide necessary data and reporting as requested by other departments.

6. Treasury & Cash Management

  • Direct all aspects of treasury operations, including daily cash positioning, cash flow forecasting, and liquidity management.
  • Manage banking relationships, investment accounting, and debt covenant compliance.
  • Develop strategies to optimize working capital, minimize borrowing costs, and ensure sufficient liquidity for system needs.
  • Monitor and report on short- and long-term cash requirements aligned with strategic goals.
  • Lead the accounting and financial reporting for the organization's investment portfolio, including pooled investments, donor-restricted funds, and board-designated reserves.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards (e.g., GAAP, FASB ASC 958) and external reporting requirements (e.g., IRS Form 990, UPMIFA).
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of investment accounting policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with the Investment Committee, external managers, and custodians to ensure accurate recording of transactions, valuations, income, and expenses.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual investment reports for executive leadership, board committees, and auditors.

7. Team Leadership & Strategic Collaboration

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team across accounting, treasury, AP, and payroll.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with finance, operational, and administrative leaders to ensure alignment of financial practices with strategic and operational goals.
