Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary or hourly range for this position is $21.30/hr. - $28.10/hr. Please note the realized minimum pay for this position will be $25/hr., steps less than $25/hr. will include an additional amount elevating to $25/hr.

Job Closing Date

Review of applications will occur as openings become available. Candidates will be selected for temporary employment in various departments as positions become available. This position is reopened every six months so please re-apply if you remain interested in the position. This position will close on 12/31/2025.

These union positions are represented by the bargaining unit AFSCME: Service - SX.

Must have valid Class C California Driver's License. Position is subject to the California DMV's "Pull Notice System" and offer of employment is contingent upon a satisfactory driving record.

About the Job

The Parking Services Department is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and enforcement of all University of California, Merced parking. The unit sells permits (either by cash or through payroll deduction), staffs kiosk-operated parking lots, and oversees metered lots. The issuance and sale of Parking Permits are strictly controlled by the department. Enforcement of all parking areas is performed by uniformed staff in accordance with CVC 21113; citations issued by agreement with the Merced Municipal Court. The purposes of this position is to meet the departments responsibility of providing parking enforcement and traffic control by monitoring UC Merced parking areas for valid permits, time zone compliance, etc., and by issuing citations where appropriate. Another role of the parking representative is to facilitate safe passage and parking for all vehicles operating on the UC Merced grounds by providing and maintaining safe equipment. Parking equipment is inspected and maintained by the department and repairs and general maintenance is performed by this position. Monitors of parking lots and campus micromobility safety using University vehicles. This position will require individuals to operate departmental vehicles.

Maintenance of Parking Facilities and Hardware

  • Ensure gate arms, electronic vehicle detectors, monitors, and fee computers operate correctly and are maintained in a good state of repair.
  • Perform as the principal liaison with outside vendors contracted to install and service field equipment and provide supplies for this equipment.
  • Repairman for parking structure to ensure consistent 7 day week operation.
  • Repair and maintain parking meters, permit vending, and change machines. Service any equipment used by the department for parking control purposes.
  • Evaluate lighting, parking lots, driveways, and other traffic areas for safety and proper signage. Make recommendations to Supervisor or Department Coordinator by processing Facilities Work Order forms.
  • Maintain inventory of hardware, keeping level of equipment and supplies on hand as necessary.
  • Assist supervisor with the maintenance of parking facility, management system, and the identification and creation of reports on facility usage.

Parking Services Support

  • Provide traffic control, push stalled vehicles out of traffic. Report fires, fuel leaking from vehicles, unattended vehicles with headlights on, engines running, etc.
  • Assist patients and visitors with directions and related information.
  • Put up and take down barricades, bollards, cones, and other traffic control mechanisms to aid in special events or alternate parking areas when necessary.
  • With appropriate tools, give battery jumps and tire inflation service as requested.
  • Report all downed signs, broken or moved concrete bumpers, damaged or malfunctioning coin operated devices and/or related equipment to Supervisor. Process a Facilities work order request form and submit to Supervisor for all grounds related repairs.
  • Replenish the exchange machine coins and deliver bills to the safe room. Assist with the collection, counting, and depositing of meter money.

Parking Compliance

  • Patrol designated parking areas to monitor compliance pursuant to Section 21113A of the California Vehicle Code.
  • Inspect each vehicle for illegal parking and issues parking citation violations pursuant to Chapter four of the University of California, Merced Traffic and Parking Code.
  • Respond to Merced Municipal Court to defend contested citations, when summoned.
  • Report all suspicious persons and/or circumstances to UC Merced Police and Supervisor. Assist UC Merced Police, if requested to be on the lookout for certain people or vehicles.
  • Perform vehicle booting and towing of vehicles as outlined in Policy and Procedures manual.

Relief Duties

  • Relieve Parking Assistants during breaks or absences, performing all duties assigned per Position Description for Title Code 5334.
  • Relieve/assist office staff selling permits, answering phones and dispatching calls as requested.
  • Assist by driving shuttle vehicles for special events as required.
Qualifications

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma and/or equivalent certification/experience/training.

AND

  • Six months of related experience, preferably in public contact work; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE

  • Working knowledge of parking operations; policies and procedures. (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of parking operations. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to confront and clarify issues.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Ability to work in hot/cold/wet weather conditions.

  • Ability to effectively convey information to others.
