Bioinformatics Scientist II (AI/ML Focus) - Essex Management

US Remote

This position supports "Essex, an Emmes Company". Essex is a biomedical informatics and health information technology-focused consultancy founded in 2009 and headquartered in Rockville, MD. The Essex team comprises experts with extensive experience in strategically developing and managing complex health and biomedical information programs for clients in the Federal Government, research academia, and private sectors.

Primary Purpose

Essex seeks a Bioinformatics Scientist II to bring advanced AI and computational modeling expertise to our precision oncology efforts. The ideal candidate combines deep experience in deep learning, graph neural networks, and large-scale biomedical data integration with a strong understanding of genomics, proteomics, and clinical informatics. As part of our Biomedical Informatics and Data Science team, you will help standardize and analyze complex biological and clinical datasets, develop scalable AI-driven models, and deliver actionable insights that accelerate cancer research and treatment strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with biologists, clinicians, and software engineers to design AI-powered analytics for genomics, proteomics, and clinical data.
  • Apply large language models and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) techniques to make biomedical data interoperable and AI-ready for the National Cancer Institute and related projects.
  • Curate, model, and integrate genetic and clinical datasets into standardized, interoperable formats to support precision medicine.
  • Work with clinical laboratories to ensure accurate data ingestion into the MATCH processing infrastructure.
  • Design, test, and optimize pipelines for variant calling and annotation, leveraging scripting languages (Python, SQL) and modern ML workflows.
  • Contribute to the design of intuitive databases and interactive web tools for researchers and clinicians.
  • Generate high-quality, interpretable reports for internal and external stakeholders, supporting clinical and research decision-making.

Qualifications

  • D. in Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or related field.
  • Strong track record in machine learning and AI, including deep learning (CNNs, GNNs) for biomedical or complex data applications.
  • Proficient in Python and SQL; experience with ML frameworks (PyTorch/TensorFlow) and code versioning (Git).
  • Familiarity with genetic variant standards (HGVS, VCF) and clinical data ontologies.
  • Demonstrated success applying AI/ML to biomedical or multi-modal datasets (genomics, proteomics, clinical).
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and communicate technical results clearly to diverse teams.
  • Ability to translate complex data analyses into actionable insights for multidisciplinary teams.
  • Track record of publications and innovation in AI-driven data science for life sciences (preferred).
