Typical Day in the Life A typical day as an intern on the Tax Controversy and Procedure team might include the following:
- Reviewing IRS/State notices
- Compose, organize and type routine and complex correspondence and IRS filings including memos, letters, reports and legal documents.
- Phone calls to taxing authorities to both investigate and resolve issues
- Researching tax law and tax compliance regulations
- Analysis of tax returns
- Work with spreadsheets and track data in a database.
- Answer phones with professionalism, greet clients, and coordinate staff meetings, conference calls and webcasts.
- Identify the root of the prospect's tax problem by asking questions and listening to the prospect's responses.
- Perform miscellaneous scanning, filing, faxing and copying duties as needed
- Pick up additional administrative responsibilities when needed.
- Provide marketing support for the Tax Controversy team including assistance with additional marketing campaigns, provide administrative support for internal marketing items, perform additional marketing administrative duties.
Training for specific tasks will include:
- Client time and billing
- Filing protests and responses to taxing authorities
- Evaluation and sorting of incoming tax notices and correspondence
- Understanding and completing Tax Controversy projects including exams, collections, penalty abatements, and resolving procedural issues
- Must be able to obtain the following:
- PTIN - a basic questionnaire is completed to register with the IRS. There is a fee of $30.75 that is fully reimbursed. There is no educational requirement.
- CAF Number - this number is assigned to Tax Practitioners on their first Tax Information Authorization that is submitted. There is no cost or educational requirement.

- You love collaborating and being part of a team but also enjoy working alone with limited supervision.
- In addition to all of this, you have a high school diploma and either general office experience or some educational training in the field of accounting/taxation/tax controversy.
- You have exceptional phone etiquette and sales skills.
- You are a self-starter and are able to work independently.
- You possess excellent interpersonal and client service skills.
- You have strong organizational/follow-up skills.
