Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways. We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance. We're looking for talented teammates who'll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Systems Test Engineering Manager.

You will:

  • Designing and developing comprehensive test plans and test cases based on system specifications and stringent security requirements for autonomous vehicles.

  • Executing a diverse range of tests to validate cybersecurity implementations, including:

    • In-vehicle testing

    • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) bench tests

    • Software-in-the-loop (SIL) simulations

  • Verifying key cybersecurity features, with a focus on:

    • Service 29 (Diagnostic Communication over UDS): Ensuring secure diagnostic access and preventing unauthorized manipulation.

    • Secure Onboard Communication (SecOC): Validating the integrity and authenticity of in-vehicle network communications.

    • Digital Key Systems: Testing the security of vehicle access and start-up functionalities via digital credentials.

  • Documenting testing results and defects, and collaborating closely with the Security team for timely resolution.

  • Developing and maintaining test automation scripts and tools to increase efficiency and test coverage.

  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of our cybersecurity testing methodologies and processes.

You have:

  • Proven experience as a Test Engineer, with a significant focus on cybersecurity in the automotive or a related industry.

  • Demonstrable ability to plan, create, and conduct tests from system specifications with minimal supervision, always prioritizing safety and repeatability.

  • Hands-on experience with various testing methodologies, including:

    • In-vehicle testing: Expertise with vehicle diagnostic tools, CAN/Ethernet sniffers, and automotive communication protocols.

    • Bench testing (HIL): Proficiency in setting up and executing tests on hardware test benches.

    • Software testing (SIL): Experience with simulation environments and software testing frameworks.

  • Solid understanding of automotive communication protocols (like CAN, LIN, Ethernet, FlexRay) and their crucial security implications.

  • Experience with Linux or Unix-based systems.

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity standards and best practices relevant to the automotive industry (e.g., UNR155, ISO 21434, Unified Diagnostic Services).

  • Proficiency in at least one scripting language (preferably Python and C++) for data analysis and test automation.

We prefer:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or a related field.

  • Experience with cybersecurity specifically within autonomous driving or ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems).
