The Head of DevSci Contracts is a leadership role in DevSci's Enabling Science group, responsible for the strategic and managerial leadership of the DevSci Contracts team and leading contract management and operations that enable timely outside services and outsourcing, access to external innovation, and accurate PO and financial data for DevSci and Translational Medicine. This is a cross-functional role that is expected to own, influence, collaborate, and drive key interfaces between DevSci, TM, Research, and corporate financial, legal, and procurement functions. The position reports to the Head of Enabling Science and is a key member of the Enabling Science Leadership Team.

The Opportunity:

The successful candidate will join our dynamic team and work in Nephrology indications including Lupus and Chronic Kidney Disease. The employee will be:

Group Management and Leadership

  • Accountable for contracting and PO/invoice management for all DevSci and TM non-clinical (animal studies plus all activities not associated with clinical trials) and exploratory activities.

  • Responsible for the organizational and strategic leadership of a high performing, agile, and well-aligned contracting team.

  • Building and managing key relationships with senior leaders (DSLT, TMLT) and stakeholders (Research Contracts, Legal, Finance, Global Procurement) to ensure effective prioritization, interfaces, and processes that align well across the enterprise.

  • Ensuring that standards and processes are implemented to create consistency, efficiency, and high standards of legal and financial compliance across shared business partner contracts, processes, and operations.

  • Providing prioritization and clarity to team members on objectives and key results.

  • Being accountable for group adherence to company and departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines (i.e, training compliance, time reporting).

  • Pro-actively evaluating ongoing contracting performance and needs and corresponding processes for the organization to drive continuous improvement and provide recommendations to address them. Lead the evaluation and subsequent implementation of new and innovative processes and initiatives.

  • Leading with a clear-the-path mentality, striving to always simplify and streamline business processes with a strong sense of urgency.

People Development and Management

  • Managing people (directly or indirectly) in order to maximize their capability and contribution to provide high quality deliverables.

  • Creating a positive work environment by encouraging mutual respect, innovation, and accountability at all levels (local, global, functional, projects/programs).

  • Ensuring that employees are appropriately trained, developed, and coached to comply with company standards.

  • Ensuring that communication is managed consistently in a timely manner with the appropriate context.

  • Conducting ongoing performance management dialogue.

  • Conducting individual development plans/career discussions.

  • Actively contributing to the performance calibration, talent management, and succession planning process.

  • Working closely with ES Head to lead the creation of career paths for DSC staff.

Contribution to Leadership of ES and any other relevant function/level

  • Assisting the head of ES in developing and implementing the strategic vision for the ES organization. Contribute to the development and timely delivery of ES goals.

  • Leading or contribute to any relevant internal initiatives increasing ES's value, efficiency, and/or innovation.

  • Representing DSC and ES in any relevant external forums, in a way that highlights the value created by the organization.

  • Advocating/driving changes within the organization and lead by example.

Who You Are:

  • Thorough knowledge of Drug Development, associated with very robust experience in contract management (including understanding of the legal and compliance requirements and risks associated with contracting activities).

  • 7+ years of experience in drafting and negotiating various types of contracts; Pharmaceutical/Biotech/CRO experience, with an emphasis in non-clinical contracts, is preferred.

  • Proven track record of leadership skills, including but not limited to influencing, motivating, organizing, managing, and providing direction to teams at all levels in a matrix environment,

  • Proven track record in successfully managing change and implementing new initiatives.

  • Demonstrated high level of organizational skills, including ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and successfully, develop and implement strategy, and evaluate processes developing resulting best practices.

  • Ability to encourage mutual respect and accountability at all levels.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to identify and resolve critical issues and assess their impact on others and on the organization.

  • Demonstrated skill in consensus building and conflict management in challenging or difficult situations, including with peers, stakeholders and senior management.

  • Proven experience working collaboratively on cross-functional teams to achieve collective goal(s).

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • 5+ years line manager experience is a plus.

  • Experience managing external vendors/suppliers is a plus.

  • This is an onsite position based on SSF.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of California is $157,400-$292,200 . Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
