Sr. Medical Director, Experimental Medicine
Experimental Medicine (EM) Strategy Integrator
BioMarin's Experimental Medicine and Biomarkers team is seeking an experienced Senior Director to serve as a key matrixed leader, driving integration and execution of EM strategy across functions -- with a primary focus on early pipeline innovation. Leveraging deep experience in translational research and end to end therapeutics development, the EM Strategy Integrator will partner with Business Unit (BU), Research, Experimental Medicine, Biomarkers, Genomics, Data Science, Clinical Pharmacology, Preclinical Safety, Regulatory, Medical Affairs and Commercial colleagues to ensure that early BioMarin assets are optimally positioned for development of transformational therapies. Both an individual contributor and matrixed mentoring role, the EM Strategy Integrator will have widespread impacts on the BioMarin early pipeline through collaborative identification of new disease indications and nurturing early projects to ensure future clinical success. Key contributions will include fostering strong connections between Experimental Medicine physicians and Research teams. In addition, this role will also bridge to BUs with the aim of driving alignment and effective utilization of EM resources in support of BU priorities. As a senior leader with expertise in translational biomarkers, this individual will also provide strategic guidance and mentorship to the Head of Biomarkers and members of the biomarker team (Biomarkers team is also part of Experimental Medicine).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide oversight of EM support of early research programs.
- Partner with EM physicians and Biomarkers team to develop clinical development concepts that serve as the strategic basis for subsequent Clinical Development Plans, with particular emphasis on demonstrating proof of mechanism in first in human and first in patient clinical trials as well as subsequent demonstration of proof of concept in the clinic.
- Provide matrixed leadership and mentorship to Experimental Medicine and Biomarker colleagues regarding development of biomarkers and endpoints that enable patient stratification.
- Work with BU, EM & Biomarkers, Genomics and Research colleagues to ensure effective support of BU priorities.
- Provide mentorship to Biomarkers team, ensuring effective prioritization of translational biomarker discovery and development
- Design and execute natural history studies that enable (1) deepened understanding of proposed targeted patient populations and (2) development of endpoints that enable efficient demonstration of POC and/or approval.
- Partner with Biomarker colleagues to ensure patient selection, pharmacodynamic, response, and approval endpoint development plans are in place for each asset.
- Represent Experimental Medicine and Biomarkers in scientific advisory and academic meetings.
- Provide input into pre-IND and IND documents as well as clinical trial protocols and supportive documents.
- Support Business Development diligence activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD required
- Significant experiences in influencing within biotech environment, leveraging demonstrated enterprise level strategic thinking
- Priority is experience with end-to-end drug development, from bench work to approval
- Comfort with balancing scientific, clinical and commercial considerations in crafting translational strategies, from indication selection through therapeutic testing and approval
- Significant demonstrated experience with regulatory interactions, IND filings, NDA submissions
- Demonstrated experience with range of small to large biotech environments preferred
- Demonstrated experience with Business Development diligences
- Strong bioinformatics and data science background
- Hands on and leadership experience with translating research programs into clinical assets
- Ability to work collaboratively in a matrixed, fast-paced environment
- Interest and curiosity in development challenges
- Effective and impactful in cross-functional team structure.
- Excellent communication skills, with a desire to develop strong internal and external collaborations.

The salary range for this position is: $224,000 to $300,000. BioMarin considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans.
