Purpose of Position

The Technician, Visual Components is responsible for the operation and maintenance of massive optics fabrication equipment for production of optical components.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The Technician, Visual Components applies fundamental principles and concepts of massive optics manufacture, assembly and facility readiness by performing the following tasks:

  • Monitors and operates massive grinding and polishing machines for the fabrication of large glass optics.
  • Sets up tooling and configures grinding machines for operation.
  • Assists in the maintenance and modification of grinding and polishing machinery.
  • Monitors, operates and programs glass sagging ovens.
  • Works with large pieces of glass, wood and/or plastics including: cutting, drilling, sanding, cleaning and packaging. In house manufacture includes using a variety of hand and power tools to fabricate components from raw materials including glass, wood, metal, various plastics and fiberglass.
  • Dimension finished glass products to tight tolerances using hand-held belt sanders.
  • Uses solvents, paints, epoxies, acids and fiberglass resins. Applies finishing products to materials by spray or by hand. Regularly uses solvents to clean parts.
  • Assists in the preparation, packaging and shipping of finished glass products. Preparation and packaging includes the fabrication of wooden shipping crates using a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Assists in testing and quality assurance of optical components, assemblies and equipment.
  • Assists the Production Manager or the Engineering Department in prototype development and testing of new products.
  • Cleans and maintains production tools and equipment. Prepares equipment and tools for use in manufacturing.
  • Responsible for the cleaning the production facility in readiness for manufacturing activities and testing; organizes tools, work areas, equipment, materials and supplies to present an efficient and orderly facility.
  • Performs routine facility maintenance including minor repairs to facility equipment; performs facility modifications and upgrades; assists tradesmen in performance of more complex building maintenance and repair.
  • Completes log sheets, route sheets; performs calculations for developing tolerance tables.
  • Participates in necessary training.
  • Overtime and shift work as required.

Minimum Education and Experience

Highschool Diploma or GED plus 2 years experience in a comparable manufacturing position or in a directly related trade i.e. machinist, welder, electrician, equipment mechanic, tele-communication installer, etc. Or minimum 2 years experience as an Entry Level Optics Manufacturing Technician plus must satisfactorily demonstrate mastery of job specific skills to his/her supervisor.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Hands on mechanical and electronic troubleshooting skills
  • Hands on welding, machining, electrical, carpentry.

EQUIPMENT KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Basic PC and Office equipment.
  • Electronic or mechanical test equipment including calipers, micrometers, digital meters and o-scopes.
  • Welding, machining, wood working etc.
  • Able to operate a forklift.
  • Ability to wear protective gear (PPE), inluding respirator.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
  • Fluency in English, through both verbal and written communications.
  • Able to read and interpret documents.
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
  • Able to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
  • Able to apply concepts of basic algebra.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES OR REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Drivers License. Forklift Certification.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 70 pounds unassisted. The employee must be able to clearly see and resolve (with or without corrective lenses) small or intricate detail. The employee must have the respiratory capacity to wear a mask respirator for 4 or more hours a day. The employee must be able to use both hands to hold and manipulate 7-15 pound power tools.
