Law 856 Housing Law and Policy Clinic I

USC Gould School of Law is seeking a part-time lecturer to co-teach in the Housing Clinic. This five-unit coursesupports students in developing valuable lawyering skills, while improving lives and impacting communities through their work.

In taking part in the clinic, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the housing crisis - from institutional injustices to economic factors to ethical considerations. The Clinic experiential learning environment encompasses client representation, coursework, policy projects, guest lectures, reflective assignments, workshops, case rounds, field experiences, and individual supervision. Students in the clinic examine avenues for tenant-protective legislation and policy change at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels, as well as participate in a breadth of legal and community engagement-related work - engaging directly with tenants, coalitions, organizers, community groups, and local decision-makers regularly. The clinic's legal work will involve representing indigent tenants and collaborating with community-based housing organizations on matters ranging from representation to strategic litigation and policy development. The Clinic is a year-long course with a prerequisite/accompanying required course titled Housing Law and Policy that begins in the Fall semester.

The co-teacher would work with the Clinic Director to teach and supervise students in their direct service work with low-income tenants, oversee policy work, and participate in the current strategic litigation in which the Clinic is involved.

Candidates for this position must have a JD, California Bar admission, and experience in direct services with low-income tenants, litigation experience, and knowledge of local laws that directly impact tenants in the City of LA. In addition, this course will be taught on campus, so instructors must be local.
