The Paul Robeson Galleries was founded in 1979 at the Robeson Campus Center at Rutgers University - Newark. Named after one of the University's most famous alumni, the galleries' mission and programming embody Paul Robeson's life-long commitment to unfettered artistic freedom, cultural democracy, and transnationalism manifested through a network of exhibition spaces on campus, and extensive community outreach programs, education programs and an active public programs series including happenings, lectures, panels, symposia, readings, receptions, and performances. |
Posting Summary |
Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution, located in Newark, New Jersey, a city of promise is seeking a Head Preparator. As part of the basic functioning of an art gallery, the Paul Robeson Galleries regularly plans and executes exhibitions of contemporary visual art. Art requires specialized handling by professional preparators for unpacking, installation, de-installation, maintenance, packing, and transportation. Artworks are protected by loan agreements and under a Rutgers insurance policy to protect them from damage by mishandling.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
- Oversees all aspects of art exhibition installation and de-installation for the Paul Robeson Galleries: including wall preparation, lighting and object placement
- Leads installing/deinstalling of exhibitions all throughout the Rutgers Newark campus
- Assists in the transportation of artwork, oversees inventory, artwork storage, and art preparation in keeping with standard museum protocols
- Regularly inspects and repairs gallery labels, didactics, pedestals, and walls
- Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Requires a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- Requires up to two years relevant experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy

Certifications/Licenses |
- Current driver's license and functional car
|
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
- Extensive preparator experience in museum environment and sound understanding of artwork handling protocols
- Experience driving truck
- Extensive experience and qualifications in the visual arts
- Excellent customer service skills
- Attention to all details involving artworks and their management, storage and display
- Experience in framing, matting and mounting artworks

- The incumbent must be familiar with the safe use of hand and power tools
- Computer skills - Excel, Microsoft office, Illustrator, Photoshop, museum collections management software a plus

Physical Demands and Work Environment |
- Most of the work will take place in an air-conditioned art museum. Occasionally, the employee will work outside for short periods while transporting artworks from building to building
- Must be able to climb ladders, bend, twist, kneel and lift and carry 75 pounds
- Will stand for most of the workday
