As a part of a diverse community of faculty and staff who represent many faith systems and worldviews, Marian University seeks a Writing Consultant to promote our Catholic Franciscan mission and identity by providing exceptional service to students, faculty, and staff. This role actively supports our mission and identity by offering exceptional service to students, faculty, and staff through individualized writing support within disciplines and across the curriculum.

The primary goal of this position is to help learners gain confidence and proficiency in writing as they engage with curriculum across all academic levels: from first-year undergraduate students to doctoral candidates.

This is a part-time, 12-month position, averaging 15 hours per week, with flexibility to work both in-person and remotely, based on campus needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Actively engage the Catholic Franciscan mission and identity of Marian University by modeling the Franciscan Sponsorship Values and honoring the legacy of the founding congregation through transformative education, unity in diversity, leadership through service, integrating faith and life, and institutional policies.


  • Provide one-on-one and group writing consultations to support learners at all academic levels, including online and graduate students.


  • Create a welcoming environment that respects and adapts to everyone's learning styles and backgrounds.


  • Help learners become more confident, self-directed, and academically successful writers.


  • Demonstrate expertise in composition, writing pedagogy, and rhetorical strategies.


  • Participate in professional development activities to enhance tutoring practices.


  • Assist in planning and facilitating peer writing tutor training.


  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.


Required Qualifications:



  • A bachelor's degree in English, writing, education, composition, rhetoric, or a related field.


  • Experience supporting the writing development of others.


  • An advanced degree (master's, doctorate, or terminal degree) in a related discipline.


  • 3-5 years of experience supporting student writing, particularly at the post-secondary level.
