The Carpenter Technology Corporation "Hartsville Operations" located in McBee, South Carolina, is a mini mill supplying a variety of sizes and specifications of high-quality round, square and hexagonal stainless-steel bars for distribution. Carpenter Technology acquired Talley Metals in 1997 to increase manufacturing capacity within the corporation's core Specialty Alloys Operations division.

NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST III

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST III

  • Proactively improve NDT and other processes and product Quality at Carpenter to increase First Time Through (FTT) using quality best practices.
  • Drive the establishment of Critical to Quality measures (CTQ), Key Process Characteristics (KCC), Key Control Characteristics (KCC), control plans and FMEA.
  • Increase customer satisfaction by reducing claims, remakes, scrap and deviations from standard work.
  • Improve critical work center Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
  • Establishes a framework for gathering and synthesizing data to effectively detect and solve quality issues to prevent recurrence using appropriate quality strategies, tools, and techniques.
  • Stabilize NDT and other processes and implement process controls (SPC) to establish and maintain process capability using statistical methods.
  • Master complex NDT, inspection, measurement and sampling methods and lead efforts for method improvements. (MSA).
  • Facilitate developing robust processes as part of the New Product Introduction (NPI).
  • Establish and implement calibrations, tests, analyses, and evaluation of NDT processes.
  • Administers and participates in the establishment of a program for preventative maintenance and calibration of production nondestructive testing equipment. Maintain records, logs, and other formal documentation required for specific nondestructive calibrations, evaluations, and certification.
  • Administers and participate in the establishment of the qualification program for nondestructive testing personnel and procedures. Review nondestructive testing specifications accompanying customer orders or inquiries and assist in the review of specification abstracts.
  • Participate in both internal and external audits of the Company's quality program as it pertains to the application of nondestructive testing.
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED FOR THE NDT QUALITY SPECIALIST III

  • High school diploma required, bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three to five years of relevant experience.
  • Must possess or obtain Carpenter Level Ill credentials within 6 months.
  • Obtain and maintain ASNT Level Ill status in all required nondestructive test methods.
  • Requires in-depth experience, knowledge and skills in own function.
  • Works independently with minimal guidance.
  • Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; guides the work of other staff members.
  • Ensures a safe workplace.
  • Promotes ways to improve the quality of life and protect the environment in the communities in which the Company does business.
  • Effectively manages small projects or sub-teams, including coordination of resources outside of own area.
  • Forecasts and plans resource requirements for small projects or sub-teams.
  • Monitors and controls costs within own work and may manage costs for small projects or areas.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering principles, standards, methods and practices, of disciplined problem-solving methods, and of the ultrasonic and eddy current testing methods.
  • Knowledge of other nondestructive testing methods (visual testing, liquid penetrant testing, magnetic particle testing), and of ultrasonic and eddy current testing equipment and various suppliers.
  • Interprets customer needs, assesses requirements and identifies solutions to nonstandard requests.
  • Works independently to address a range of standard and non-standard situations.
  • Ability to facilitate cross-functional teams to resolve white space issues.
  • Problem solving skills include check sheet, Pareto diagram, cause-and-effect diagram, graphs, control charts, histogram and scatter diagram.
  • Ability to apply continuous improvement methods, such as Practical Problem Solving (PPS), Six Sigma, Lean principles and Error Proofing as a facilitator or team leader.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions, to perform independent work on larger assignments with minimal coaching from higher level engineers, supervisor or manager, to work in a production environment, and to operate a computer workstation.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
