Job Summary

Disconnects, removes, dismantles, rebuilds, repairs, assembles, installs, operates, tests, orders parts for, and maintains various types of locks, latches, door closers, handsets, panic bar exit devices, fire door components, card access system hardware, and other related equipment and keys. Functions a Project Assistant and work with contractors.

Wage: $44.10 per hour (12-month position)

THE SELECTION PROCESS: will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following: education and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods. The Office of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations. Oral examinations may include written exercises. Selection process component weights will be determined by further analysis of the job.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Must have a working knowledge of and skill in navigating a Computerized Maintenance Management Software system (preferably in AssetWORKS)
  • Knowledge of and skill in reading and interpreting project specifications and drawings related to the trade and as necessary to coordinate with other trades.
  • Knowledge of and skill and ability in installing, repairing, maintaining, inspecting, testing and modifying:
  • Various types of locks, latches, door closers, handsets, panic bar exit devices, fire door components, etc.
  • Electric access control system hardware
  • Ability to estimate and allocate manpower, materials and equipment related to the trade.
  • Working knowledge of computer applications including MS Office software and AiM Asset Manager Software.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information and prepare field reports as required.
  • Ability to direct others and construct and/or erect various types of support equipment, including scaffolding, swing stages, bosons chairs, extension and step ladders and needle beam scaffolding.

Working Environment:

  • Exposure to the weather
  • Exposure to dust, dirt, general construction debris, hazardous materials, etc. that may require the use of respiratory protection.
  • Exposure to loud noises that may require the use of hearing protection devices.
  • Exposure to confined spaces that may require special rigging, harnessing, etc.
  • Essential physical requirements, such as climbing, standing, stooping, crawling, etc.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to climb and work at heights at or above 70 feet in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift object weighting up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Exposure to work environments as previously indicated
Qualifications

Education Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)

Certifications and Licensing Requirements:

  • Journeyman Locksmith Certification from an accredited organization.
  • Valid State of Wisconsin Motor Vehicle operator's license and availability of properly insured personal vehicle at time of appointment and throughout employment.
  • Certification in the EPA Asbestos Abatement Training Program (O&M) within 6 months of appointment (Note 1)
  • Silica Hazard Awareness Training within first month of appointment (Note 1,2)
  • Lead Paint Awareness Training within 6 months of appointment (Note 1)
  • Scaffolding User and Erector Training Certification within 6 months of appointment (Note 1,2)
  • Fall Protection Competent Person Training Certification within 6 months of appointment (Note 1)
  • Confined Space Entry training within 6 months of appointment (Note 1,2)
  • Completion of DFMS Maintenance and Repair Staff New Hire EHS Orientation Training (Note 2)

Note 1 Training and/or testing will be provided by MPS. Employee must obtain the certification within the time allotted.

Note 2 Training modules assigned on the MPS Learning Management System (LMS).

Experience Requirements:

  • Five (5) years of experience at a journeyman level locksmith work level.
  • One (1) year of experience in operating within a Computerized Maintenance Management Software system (preferably in AssetWORKS)
Responsibilities

  • Installs, remodels, removes, rebuilds, repairs, inspects, tests, procures and maintains various types of doors and casework hardware systems, devices and assemblies throughout the district
  • Coordinates with low voltage electricians for installing and maintaining access control systems and associated hardware.
  • Performs bench, machine and hand tool work; operates key cutting machines to cut keys.
  • Functions as a Project Assistant to estimate, plan and oversee projects completed by contractors, as required, to ensure compliance with contract standards, details, specifications and deadlines.
  • Navigates and monitosr Computerized Maintenance Management Software system (preferably AssetWORKS) for trade related work orders, various data, budget targets, etc.
  • Operates and maintains equipment related to the trade.
  • Actively support the MPS Strategic Plan.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
