Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Study Abroad Office (
SAO) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is the primary unit charged with study abroad program development, oversight, and advising.
SAO creates transformative global learning experiences for all students to pursue their Carolina education at sites around the world.
UNC Chapel Hill is a national leader in study abroad participation and ranks in the top 20 among all U.S. higher education institutions for annual study abroad enrollment. Based within the College of Arts & Sciences, the office oversees study abroad and domestic study programs that enroll students from the College as well as other
UNC Schools. Programs include student exchange, direct-enroll, partner provider, and
UNC faculty-led programs, and educational opportunities that encompass traditional courses, internships, research, service and virtual programs. The
SAO employs a staff of approximately 20 fulltime professionals and manages a recharge center and total budget of $30MM, consisting of $15MM in cash and an additional $15MM in expense transactions. The Study Abroad Office serves approximately 2000 outgoing undergraduate students plus over 300 incoming students from UNC's global partners. The College has articulated a goal of increasing outgoing undergraduate participation to 50 percent. To accomplish this goal, the office collaborates with academic and administrative units throughout the College, as well as with other
UNC schools in support the University's global mission. The Office is affiliated with
UNC Global and is located in the FedEx Global Education Center. Though based within the College of Arts & Sciences, the office serves as a resource for the entire Carolina community. |
Position Summary |
This opportunity is for a part-time, temporary Resident Advisor (RA) position at the
UNC-IE Highlands Field Site program (
HFS) which is administered by Study Abroad Office. This program is located in the mountains of North Carolina on the Highlands Biological Station. Similar to an on-campus RA, the IE-
HFS RA will be responsible for creating and maintaining a positive, healthy, and safe living situation for a group of up to 15 students enrolled in the semester-long field site program. The RA lives in the housing quarters with the students on the Highlands Biological Station campus. RAs also have the responsibility of ensuring that students are respectful of other guests who stay at other facilities at the Highlands Biological Station for short or extended periods of time (weekends to semester). The RA keeps the IE-
HFS Program Directors informed about successes and challenges at the residence at weekly meetings. Please see the following for information about the location of the IE-Highlands Field Site: https://highlandsbiological.org/ Housing for the IE-
HFS is the Cottages, where the RA will have a single room, but shared bathroom facilities and common areas.
Specific duties include:
* Be present on move-in and move-out day to facilitate an organized moving.
* Build community by providing social and educational activities and informing students of local activities of interest.
* Ensure students maintain clean and healthy living areas, including bedrooms, bathrooms, and shared living spaces.
* Adhere to and enforce
UNC and
HBS rules for conduct.
* Be a peer counselor and serve as a role model to students.
* Complete administrative tasks, such as room condition forms and provide assistance when there are housing issues.
* Meet with the IE-
HFS Directors regularly to discuss recent happenings and challenges at the residence and plans for upcoming social and educational activities.
* Refer students to University and community resources as needed.
* Help IE-
HFS faculty and staff with logistics as needed associated with meetings and field trips, including meal planning, grocery shopping, gathering and loading supplies, and arranging for reservations as needed. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Leadership and/or communication experience. Willingness to take responsibility for developing and maintaining a clean and productive living environment that allows for the academic and personal growth of the student body. Willingness to adhere to and encourage others' adherence to rules. Willingness to stay at the residence during all in-session time frames and many weekends (being present for at least every other weekend throughout the semester). RA is required to move out of housing at the end of the semester once the other students have departed. Willingness to participate in RA trainings and Mental Health modules and workshops. |

Experience in similar fields. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
