POSITION SPECIFICS

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking applicants for an Academic Adviser for the College of the Liberal Arts.

As a unit of the College of the Liberal Arts, Liberal Arts Academic Advising holistically supports students to design plans that incorporate academic, career, and personal goals while meeting the standards of the undergraduate degree and providing a framework upon which students can develop intellectually, socially, and professionally.

Liberal Arts Academic Advisers are committed to embracing the diverse backgrounds from which students come and fostering an environment of inclusion and belonging.

Through promoting co-curricular experiences, fostering creativity, and encouraging engagement within the College and University, Liberal Arts Academic Advisers support students in defining success for themselves and making meaning of their experiences.

Liberal Arts Academic Advising is seeking someone who is committed to the values of the College of the Liberal Arts - communication, critical thinking, ethical leadership, and global awareness - to provide academic advising to undergraduate Liberal Arts students and students in other Colleges interested in entering the College of the Liberal Arts.

Other key responsibilities of the Academic Adviser include:

  • Advising students on academic policies and procedures, course scheduling, monitoring degree progress, and maintaining confidentiality of student records

  • Recognizing specific student challenges, providing support and assistance, and making appropriate referrals

  • Serving as first point of contact for faculty and staff in departments for assigned major(s) and consulting with Department Heads and Undergraduate Officers on departmental initiatives

  • Collaborating with colleagues in Advising, throughout the College and across Penn State, as needed to further unit goals

  • Participating in College and University programs including undergraduate orientation, recruitment events, and other initiatives

  • Participating in at least one advising committee that contributes to student success or adviser development

The Academic Adviser will also be expected to represent the College at events and programs, which may require working infrequent weekend and evening hours.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, communicate effectively, pay attention to detail, efficiently manage time, balance multiple responsibilities, and adapt to change.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Academic Adviser - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Academic Adviser - Intermediate Professional, this position requires: Master's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

The College of the Liberal Arts is supportive of flexible work arrangements when aligned with the ability to meet the needs of the unit and the essential duties of the position. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

In accordance with College guidelines, this position requires a minimum of three days per week of on-site work at the designated work location.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $42,100.00 - $67,300.00.
