The Position
This role is a key member of the Manufacturing Leadership Team and has responsibility for driving strategic execution and operational performance across the manufacturing network. The leader will ensure that it encompasses internal sites and external partners, delivers our innovative medicines to patients, meeting and exceeding all requirements for safety, quality, reliability, and commercial demand. This leader will translate the long-term vision into concrete results by owning the network's strategic deployment, governing all major programs, and building a culture of excellence in execution and continuous improvement. They will act as a strategic partner to the Manufacturing head, ensuring the network is not only performing today but is also being actively built to meet the challenges of tomorrow. This role governs the strategy execution and performance management for a portfolio of products generating over CHF 50 billion in annual sales. It is a highly complex business spanning multiple modalities and technologies. Accountable for the performance delivery of a network budget over 2 Billion CHG and for the portfolio management and execution of over CHF 400 million in annual Capital Expenditures (CapEx). Drives performance and strategy across internal Drug Substance and Drug Product manufacturing sites and a network of over 60 external supply partners (CDMOs). This role is the primary driver for delivering overall OpEx performance by ensuring strong governance, prioritization, and clear trade-off decisions. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Strategy Deployment & Execution
Leads Strategy Deployment: Owns the 0-3-5 year Hoshin Kanri process, ensuring the deployment of business priorities from the PTLT to the shop floor and driving alignment across all sites and functions. Drives Network Plan Execution: Takes the strategy set by senior leadership (PTLT, PTY) and holds the network accountable for its delivery, identifying clear trade-off decisions and ensuring strong governance. Governs Business Delivery of Capex: Partners with Global Engineering (PTT) to drive the on-time, on-budget implementation of the network's capital portfolio from a site perspective. Owns the PMO: Leads the Network PMO and holds full accountability for all major programs affecting the network, including Tech Transfers, Capex/Opex programs, digital innovations, and acquisitions/divestitures.
2. Performance & Operations Management
Owns Performance Management: Builds and fosters a robust performance management system throughout the manufacturing unit, translating the E2E Product Performance Review into actionable performance dashboards. Drives Operational Excellence: Drives site OpEx performance and implements standardized LEAN methodologies, including the Daily Rhythm and Schedule (DRS) system, to ensure efficiency and continuous improvement. Owns Risk & Resiliency: Owns the network's Risk Management and Business Continuity processes. Executes all resiliency deliverables and ensures robust, rapid, and transparent issue management across the network. Ensures Launch Readiness: Leads the Product Launch Readiness process for all sites, partnering with CMC, QA, RA, and Supply Chain to guarantee flawless launch execution.
3. Network & Capability Building
Drives Network of the Future: In close collaboration with PTY and PTT, leads the execution of the strategic roadmap for the "Network of the Future," including the implementation of digitalization, automation, and future technology platforms. Drives Network Optimization & Standardization: Drives network optimization (internal/external) to ensure delivery and is accountable for overarching network standardization to enhance efficiency, quality, and cross-site learning. Builds Future Capabilities: Leads the initiative to build critical future-focused skills across the network (Digital, HSE, Quality), in cooperation with the learning organizations.
4. Leadership & Stakeholder Management
Builds a High-Performing Team: Leads a direct team including the PMO Lead, Risk/Resiliency Lead, and Head of Manufacturing Capability. Fosters a high-performing culture with a relentless focus on business integration, execution, and continuous improvement. Manages Diverse Relationships: Drives deep integration and alignment with all key internal functions (PTS, PTT, PTQ, PTE, PTD, Supply Chain, Commercial) and external alliance partners. Drives Business Development: Leads manufacturing inputs for Business Development activity, including due diligence, business integration design, and alliance management with partners/CDMOs.
WHO YOU ARE:
A minimum of 15 years in progressive leadership roles within a global pharmaceutical manufacturing environment. A career history reflecting a full stack of Tech Ops experiences across multiple functions (Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Engineering, Quality). Proven track record of executing complex programs and achieving financial, service, reliability, and quality targets in a large-scale, matrixed organization. Expert in driving competitive advantage through operational excellence and LEAN methodologies (DRS). Deep understanding of the E2E value chain and P&L management with significant experience governing large operational and capital budgets. Solves complex problems by gleaning meaning from available data; uses personal judgment and multiple problem-solving tools to come to the best conclusion in ambiguous situations. An exceptional leader of people who sets guiding goals, measures accomplishments, holds people accountable, gives candid feedback, and inspires teams to perform at a higher level and embrace change. Strong ability for strategic analysis and translating opportunities into concrete execution plans. Able to orchestrate multiple complex activities at once in a highly structured way.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco is $300,390 - $371,070 Annually. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance, as well as participation in a long-term incentive program.
