Summary:
*Supervises operational personnel, assures appropriate security response, proper follow-up occurs on all incidents, and all documentation is accurate and complete.
*Participates in the formulation and implementation of departmental strategic planning.
*Represents the department and/or shift on interdepartmental and intradepartmental committees,
*Participates in the annual preparation of the department budget.
*Ensures that hospital employees, visitors, and patients heed hospital policies and practices relating to security issues.
*Assists with the day-to-day site/shift operation.
*Ensure report writing is conducted professionally and timely.
*Ensure vacancies are covered prior to departing shift.
*Cover Security Officer vacancies, if required by Security Manager or Director of Security.

Essential Functions:

  • Is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the site(s)/shift(s).
  • Assumes charge responsibilities in the absence of the shift manager and takes a lead role in responding to emergencies or major occurrences that require departmental intervention.
  • Assumes all operational duties and responsibilities of security officer when appropriate.
  • Participates in interviewing and hiring process for operational staff
  • Provides orientation to new employees; evaluates capability, performance, efficiency, and appearance of staff on a routine basis, completing formal performance evaluations annually.
  • Assesses and participates in the training needs of operational staff.
  • Ensures that hospital security regulations are enforced, and that criminal violations and security problems are investigated and appropriately reported to management and law enforcement agencies.
  • Conducts security surveys/analyses/ALERT program to determine vulnerability and risk to the Institution and communicates risk reduction recommendations to appropriate parties.

Experience
Experience working withing security or law enforcement for 3-5 years (5-7 years preferred) and supervisory experience 1 year (2-3 years preferred).

Education
Minimum of a high school diploma or GED required.

Associate degree or 60 college credits preferred.

Shift Assignment: The Security Supervisor must be available to work vacant shifts upon request or remain on duty for uncontrollable vacancies or emergency incidents.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities - Performs daily operational functions as directed and upon request by the Security Manager or the Dispatcher to ensure that McLean's operational needs are met efficiently.

  • Operational responsibilities of the Officer include but are not limited to the following: Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergency requests for assistance issued by the Supervisor or Dispatcher.
  • Responds immediately and appropriately to all emergency, contingency, or disaster situations.
  • Responds as soon as possible to all non-emergency calls assigned by the Supervisor or Dispatcher.
  • Documents all incidents after response and informs Dispatcher of actions taken. - Completes all electronic incident reports in an objective manner, writes in a clear style, and submits all incident reports with accompanying documentation prior to departing from campus at the end of the shift.
  • Utilizes strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to develop and build strong relationships with the hospital community.
  • Manages complex and dynamic and emotionally charged situations to help restore order, investigate nefarious or criminal activity, and take the appropriate safety and security actions.
  • Conducts initial investigations into all reports of suspicious activity, persons, hazards or risk, and takes the necessary steps to mitigate risk to patients, visitors and staff.
  • Takes appropriate action, when necessary, appropriate, or mandated, based on training procedure and legal requirements.
  • Uses effective and appropriate de-escalation techniques when addressing disorderly, disruptive, or emotionally charged persons.
  • Demonstrates reasonable application of physical force when necessary and appropriate to contain, restrain, or stop a physical threat or assault.
  • Provides escorts to patients, visitors, employees, and others to ensure the safety of the requester.
  • Patrols McLean property and grounds; documents all deficiencies and/or violations of policy.
  • Ensures that only authorized vehicles are allowed access to parking areas controlled by McLean and documents violations of parking policy.
  • Performs access control functions: ensuring that all employees, vendors, and contractors are in possession of an authorized form of identification that is clearly visible; enforcing McLean visitor policies and restrictions; and restricting access by individuals who have no authorized business on McLean property.
  • Performs Dispatch and/or Console duties as assigned by the Supervisor/Manager. Dispatch/console duties include but are not limited to the following:
  • Coordinates Security activities, acts as liaison to other McLean departments and external agencies, reflecting the friendly, courteous, helpful and professional attitude of the department always.
  • Coordinates assignments of scheduled staff to calls for service and other activities in an equitable fashion.
  • Answers incoming internal and external phone calls, provides callers with information and appropriate transfers.
  • Prioritizes and assigns responses to incidents and requests for assistance and ensures that all are resolved in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains a chain of custody of all property, evidence, and equipment turned into the Security office.
  • Documents all actions taken by departmental staff and ensures all incidents are reported and that all supporting documentation is provided by Security officers assigned to respond to calls for assistance.
  • Monitors all electronic security and fire systems associated with the departmental operations at the Security Office in accordance with department Policies and Procedures.
  • Notifies the Supervisor when appropriate to provide additional resources or regarding a systems failure.
  • Performs all services in accordance with the appropriate McLean Policy and Procedure Manual.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Security Supervisor/Manager/ Director of Security.


Must obtain and maintain required certification in the following programs (training provided by department):

  • CPR/AED/First Aid (if applicable)
  • AVADE Certification
  • International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Basic Officer Certification (within first 180 days)

Reliable and flexible. Strong writing skills to provide and maintain documentation to support data.

Basic computer skills; typing and use of database software.

Technology: use of access control and database software, communications equipment, first aid equipment.

Must be able to read, write, and speak English fluently. Fluency in more than one language preferred.
