Position Summary: The first goal of the ESL Teacher as Leader is to ensure that English Language Learners have access to universal instruction and assessment. To achieve this, it is the belief that these staff have a tremendous opportunity to build the skill of non-ESL certified staff to meet the English Language Acquisition needs as they simultaneously teach their content. As a result, the approach the ESL Teacher Leader takes to ensure this is complex and should be responsive to the needs of the learners in the school. The ESL Teacher will ensure the program is implemented according to the standards set forth by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP). The ESL Teacher plans and implements the ELL Program within national best practices and DPI guidelines.

  • ESL Teacher as leader will, first and foremost, work directly with English Learners, and teachers of English Learners during English/Spanish Medium Instruction or Assessment.
  • ESL Teacher as Leader role will include direct instruction with English learners.
  • ESL Teacher as Leader will also model, co-plan and co-instruct with teachers through coaching cycles rather than permanent co-teaching.
  • ESL Teacher as Leader will be trained to specifically support the curriculum frameworks with which English learners and their teachers interact. The expectation is that the ESL Teacher Leader takes on a role as instructional leader to support and coach the professional practices at their site as a form of co-servicing.

  • ESL Teacher as Leader is expected to be an active member and leader of the building by serving on the ILT team, including to conduct non-evaluative walk-throughs and instructional rounds to build practice through feedback and data analysis.
  • ESL Teacher as Leader as part of their ESL teacher role, is responsible for site-based administration of the ACCESS for ELLs assessment.
  • ESL Teacher as Leader are expected to demonstrate and lead site-based utilization of data for monitoring and instruction in relation to language acquisition, literacy and content area achievement as an addition to the role of ESL teacher.


Position Reports to: School Principal

Qualifications:

  • BS Degree in Education with DPI ELL/ESL Certification K-8th grade.
  • 2+ years' experience working as an ELL Teacher with grades K-8th grade.
  • Bilingual speaker (Spanish) required
  • Highly proficient at using online, digital, and real-time data software to enhance English language skills at all levels.
  • Interpersonal, collaborative, and planning skills
  • Ability to support children and their families
  • Ability to analyze issues, identify options, and implement solutions
  • Ability to work cooperatively with people in and outside of the Education Department
  • Ability to communicate (verbally and in writing) and effectively interact with children, their family members, management, and staff members
  • Ability to respond positively to work direction and guidance from others
  • Ability to work independently, managing multiple demanding tasks under critical timeframes


Physical and Mental Requirements: (Occasionally 1% - 33% of time; frequently 34% - 66% of time; continuously 67% - 100% of time): Occasionally - lifting up to 25 pounds, Rarely - lifting over 25 pounds, Occasionally - walking and standing, Continuously - sitting, Frequently - hand manipulation / dexterity when writing, using PC, and using other office equipment, occasionally - bending and reaching.

Environmental Conditions:

Occasional exposure to infectious or communicable diseases inherent to care of ill children, occasional exposure to loud or unpleasant voices due to unpredictable behavior of children and seasonal exposure to high humidity due to temperature control of the facility, heat and cold due to the internal and external environment.
