A GPR Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of subsurface utilities in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities, must be familiar with industry standards, policies, guidelines, and procedures. Responsibilities
In addition, you will:
- Operate Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and other locating equipment to detect underground utilities, anomalies, and potential hazards in support of construction activities.
- Interpret GPR data and mark utility locations clearly for field crews (spray paint, flags, or other methods).
- Perform pre-job site inspections and attend job site walkouts to assess conditions and identify risks.
- Collaborate closely with aerial and UGE crews to plan safe digging and pole installation activities.
- Review site maps, blueprints, and utility records to validate GPR findings and confirm accuracy.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all locates and findings.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, local/state regulations, and company procedures.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, crew leads, and utility owners to prevent service interruptions or damage.
- Conduct quality checks on locate work and report discrepancies or unsafe conditions.
- Support emergency locate requests as needed to avoid service delays.
- Assist in training new team members on GPR usage and best practices (if applicable).
Qualifications

- As the Utility Locator usually works alone, an employee in this class is expected to exercise considerable initiative in moving efficiently through the day's work assignments
- You have considerable independent judgment must be used, as the accuracy of the locate depends heavily upon how well the readings from the equipment are interpreted
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training or certifications in utility locating or construction a plus.
- 2+ years of experience in utility locating, preferably with GPR equipment.
- Experience working in telecom construction, especially with both aerial and UGE crews, strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of telecom infrastructure, right-of-way usage, and utility layout patterns.
- Ability to interpret GPR scans, utility maps, and as-builts accurately.
- Familiarity with One Call/811 procedures and safe excavation practices.
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrains.
- Physically able to walk long distances, bend, lift equipment, and work in congested or active job sites.
- Valid driver's license with clean driving record the past 3 years; CDL is a plus.
- You are willing and able to work overtime as required
- You can lift up to 50 lbs.
