About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

We're looking for a highly experienced and technically profound Software Functional Safety Architect to join our dynamic team in Palo Alto. In this critical role, you'll be instrumental in defining and ensuring the functional safety of our complex embedded software systems, particularly those built around System-on-Chips (SoCs) within our electric vehicles. You'll leverage your deep expertise in ISO 26262, specifically Part 6 (Product Development at the Software Level), to architect our software development lifecycle, ensuring compliance and the highest levels of safety integrity for our next-generation products.

Responsibilities

* Lead and drive functional safety activities throughout the software development lifecycle, from concept to production, for embedded systems in our EVs.
* Architect and define safety-critical software architectures, designs, and implementations to ensure adherence to ISO 26262 Part 6 requirements.
* Conduct thorough safety analyses, including FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and FTA (Fault Tree Analysis), with a strong focus on software aspects.
* Define and implement robust software safety concepts, including requirements elicitation, specification, and traceability.
* Collaborate closely with hardware, systems, and test engineering teams to ensure seamless integration and validation of safety mechanisms.
* Oversee and perform software safety verification and validation activities, including code reviews, static analysis, dynamic analysis, and unit/integration/system testing.
* Act as a subject matter expert for ISO 26262 Part 6, providing guidance and training to software development teams.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of our functional safety processes and methodologies.
* Evaluate and define safety mechanisms and diagnostics for SoC subsystems, including CPU, memory, peripherals, and communication interfaces.
* Participate in safety audits and assessments, both internal and external.
* Mentor junior engineers and foster a strong safety culture within the organization.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
* Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.
* 10+ years of overall experience in software development for embedded systems.
* Demonstrable deep understanding and hands-on experience with ISO 26262, with a strong focus on Part 6 (Product Development at the Software Level).
* Extensive experience working with System-on-Chips (SoCs) and their various subsystems (e.g., CPUs, GPUs, DSPs, memory controllers, communication interfaces like PCIe, Ethernet, CAN, LIN).
* Proven experience in developing safety-critical software for automotive, aerospace, medical, or similar highly regulated industries.
* Proficiency in programming languages such as C/C++ for embedded systems.
* Experience with embedded real-time operating systems (RTOS) and bare-metal development.
* Familiarity with software development tools, including version control systems (Git), issue tracking (Jira), and requirements management tools (DOORS, Polarion).
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a meticulous attention to detail.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
* ISO 26262 certification (e.g., CFSP, AFSP).
* Experience with functional safety standards beyond ISO 26262 (e.g., IEC 61508, SOTIF).
* Experience with hardware-software co-design for safety.
* Familiarity with cybersecurity principles in embedded systems.
* Experience with model-based design and auto-code generation for safety-critical applications.
