The Paper Application Engineer, Paperboard Division serves as the primary subject matter expert in coated board production. This role is responsible for leading in collaboration with division leadership, plant managers and paper machine leaders the development and deployment of paper machine asset reliability strategy integrating technical support, product development, quality systems and predictive maintenance programs with a focus on improving productivity and operating efficiencies.

As one of the technical leaders, the application engineer will be called up to lead short & long-term process improvement and capital projects ranging from asset management to environmental and safety programs. This role is also responsible for collaborating with the plants to assist with operations, outages, maintenance, technical analysis, safety, and engineering and operations capability development.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Serves as principal internal subject matter expert for paper making for the sites.
  • Principle contacts for support and resourcing from external groups.
  • Leads the development and execution of Operations best practices and work systems.
  • Assist with the development and execution of asset reliability programs incorporating capital prioritization and Operations best practices.
  • Develops functional cross sharing platform for best practices and learnings across all sites.
  • Provides expertise for urgent troubleshooting as needed.
  • Assists sites in planning, execution, and critique of major shutdowns.
  • Lead and support a culture of continuous improvement and developing of critical KPIs through review, refresh, and refinement of the paper machine improvement plans.
  • Assist with the development and execution of asset reliability plans for the company.
  • Works with mill teams to identify gaps in equipment uptime and assists team with building sustainable plans to close.
  • Identify opportunities to improve overall performance through the development and deployment of operating standards.
  • Proactively monitor evolving technology landscape for opportunities to continuously improve productivity, processes, and efficiencies.
  • Foster an environment that encourages employee engagement through a demonstration and modelling of Clearwater Paper's Core Values.
  • Drive a culture of technical collaboration throughout business.
  • Champion and execute Clearwater Paper's Talent and Performance Management process incorporating goal development and deployment, talent reviews, succession planning, and talent selection and development to ensure organization sustainment.
  • Enable technical sustainment plan by promoting, developing, and transferring knowledge across work groups.
  • Mentor mill leadership at all levels of organization.

What you will need:



  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field preferred
  • Minimum ten years of experience in paper mill operations with progressive responsibility required.
  • Minimum five years of budgetary responsibilities
  • Experience in board manufacturing preferred
  • Thorough understanding of paper machine operations
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal development through continuing education, coaching and developing others.
  • Highly adept performing at a fast pace communicating and collaborating across multiple stakeholders.
  • Previous experience using a Computer Maintenance Management system preferred (e.g., JD Edwards).
  • Must possess analytical troubleshooting skills.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Continuous improvement/lean manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Demonstrated ability to foster Continuous Improvement.


Total Reward Details:

We're committed to providing an exceptional workplace experience, including a comprehensive total reward package. The base salary range for the position is $163,000 - $244,500 and is eligible for our Annual Incentive Plan. Base pay offered will consider internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience among other factors. Benefits are generally available after 30 days and include medical, dental, vision, life, disability coverage, employee assistance program, and a 401k plan. Starting paid time off includes 15 vacation days, 5 floating holidays, and 9 company holidays per full year.
