Essential Job Duties
Are you an experienced construction professional ready to lead meaningful, high-impact projects on one of the nation's most beautiful and sustainable campuses? NC State University is seeking a Construction Technician Lead to join our Landscape Maintenance and Operations team. This role is essential in guiding a variety of concrete, asphalt, and landscape construction efforts that enhance the function, safety, and aesthetic of the university's outdoor environment. As one of two leads supporting both the General Shop and Landscape Services teams, you'll manage high-volume, high-priority assignments and collaborate across departments to deliver top-quality results.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:


  • Lead and coordinate daily construction and landscaping projects across the General Shop and Landscape Services units

  • Supervise installation and maintenance of concrete, asphalt, brick, block, and related structures
  • Oversee landscape construction tasks, including soil preparation, grading, planting, and post-installation care
  • Develop scopes of work and provide cost and material estimates for assigned projects
  • Collaborate with university stakeholders to communicate timelines and project plans
  • Monitor work quality and ensure adherence to safety standards, project specifications, and university guidelines
  • Apply advanced construction knowledge to troubleshoot site issues and adapt plans as needed
  • Cross-train and mentor team members in construction and landscape techniques to support a skilled and adaptable workforce
  • Respond to urgent work requests with timely and organized project management

Other Responsibilities

  • This position will participate and provide direction for other staff members to build/repair brick or block, walls, steps, manholes, catch basins, demolition of walls for door openings, installation of landscape projects and hardscapes that include brick, concrete, grid pavers, cobblestone, boulders and stone
  • Other tasks and responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the organization and evolving priorities.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the Trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and the public to ensure clarity and accuracy in work assignments and general operations
  • Comprehend and follow verbal and written instructions related to job duties, safety procedures, and project expectations
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of standard practices, tools, and techniques in the masonry and landscaping trades
  • Safely lift and carry materials weighing up to 60 to 90 pounds, in accordance with established safety guidelines

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in maintenance and repair of brick & block masonry, waterproofing foundations, and experience with layout and installation of landscape construction
Required License or Certification

  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to obtain a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire and it must be maintained
