About the Department
The Career Pathways Initiative of CEFS works to equitably prepare youth and adults of all ages for career paths in sustainable agriculture and food systems through a collaborative, dynamic network of CEFS programs and community partnerships.

CEFS is a partnership of NC State University, NC A&T State University, and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The Center for Environmental Farming Systems develops and promotes just and equitable food and farming systems that conserve natural resources, strengthen communities, improve health outcomes, and provide economic opportunities in North Carolina and beyond. Our goals are to: provide new economic opportunities in rural and urban communities, develop technologies that promote a cleaner and healthier environment, educate the next generation of farmers, consumers, and scientists, and engage all citizens in the food system.
Essential Job Duties
The Center for Environmental Farming Systems ( CEFS) is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to lead the implementation of the WNCStrong Youth Service Corp Program that is a USDA-funded Rapid Response Project initiative supporting disaster recovery, youth development, and agricultural resilience in Western North Carolina. This role involves overseeing program implementation, youth engagement, teacher mentorship, professional development, disaster recovery projects, and program evaluation to support youth and Hurricane recovery efforts in Western North Carolina. This position will also be an integral part of the Agricultural Education Team at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.

The WNCStrong Youth Service Corps empowers youth (ages 16-18) to assist agricultural communities in rebuilding critical infrastructure following Hurricane Helene while fostering professional growth and socio-emotional resilience.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Program Leadership & Administration: Lead all aspects of the WNCStrong Youth Service Corps implementation, Collaborate with CEFS leadership and partners to achieve program objectives, and Ensure alignment with USDA and CEFS guidelines, equity principles, and community needs.
  2. Recruitment & Engagement: Coordinate and lead teacher recruitment, training, and mentorship across four target counties, Oversee youth recruitment, onboarding, and orientation, and Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, and agricultural networks to maximize participation and impact.
  3. Program Development & Delivery: Develop and deliver youth career and professional development sessions focused on agriculture, disaster recovery, and leadership, Organize monthly disaster recovery service projects in collaboration with local farmers and food businesses, Facilitate access to social connectivity and mental health resources for participants.
  4. Evaluation & Reporting: Implement evaluation strategies to monitor program outcomes and impact, Collect and analyze data to inform continuous improvement and reporting to USDA funders., Assist in long-term strategic planning and securing additional funding for program sustainability.
  5. Participation in the Agricultural Education Team within CEFS: Participate in team meetings and lead or support team learning activities.


This position is located in Western, NC (UNC-Asheville campus). Current budget is expected for one-year.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in a relevant field, such as agronomy, rural sociology, or agricultural education.
Other Required Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of relevant experience working in education, youth engagement or community programming.
  • Demonstrated ability to run programs and work with school districts.
  • Excellent organizing, people, decision-making, project management, and time management skills are required, as is the ability to work well in remote and in-person settings.
  • Capable of doing all the described activities independently as well as working with a team.
  • Comfortable making decisions autonomously and work with little direction.
  • Some experience in agriculture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in education or relevant field.
  • 10+ years experience working in educational settings and experience teaching.
  • Proven ability to engage youth in meaningful education and service-oriented activities.
  • Experience with resilience and equity frameworks.

  • A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
