The BI developer will partner with analysts and stakeholders to develop reporting that is part of a transformation away from individual, manually-created, labor intensive excel-based management to the use of BI tools as a shared team resource.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Finance Business Intelligence Developer develops dashboards, reports, and metrics for BMC Finance and Operations. This position is vital in helping hospital leadership understand the financial health of the hospital via intelligent, interactive reporting. The Finance Business Intelligence Developer will help overhaul existing Excel reports and recreate them in business intelligence software. This position will be responsible for planning, designing, coordinating and developing highly interactive dashboards with built-in guided analytics for various lines of business using shared data infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Manage the life cycle of advanced reporting and business intelligence analytics dashboards, including business requirements gathering, functional specification write-up, prototyping, development, quality testing, user acceptance testing, roll-out and post-launch enhancements implementation


  • Understand (and reverse-engineer as necessary) existing excel reports and then create reliable, validated reporting solutions in Tableau that enable users to obtain actionable insights quickly and efficiently.

  • Develop reporting solutions consistent with overall data governance principles that establish Finance analytics as a source of truth within the BMCHS.

  • Develop reporting solutions that integrate "drill to details," validation logic checks, and data definitions into the visual reporting, enabling subject matter experts to assist in troubleshooting of visual reporting and substantiate reported summary data.

  • Define and document key terms within reports; translate report language to users where applicable


Use design best practices in data visualization that promote user friendly and high-quality products


  • Incorporate features such as KPIs, Heat Maps, Scatterplots, Bar Charts, Slicers, Drill down, Drill up, etc.

  • Create interactive filters, parameters, and calculations

  • Follow consistent design principles to create reporting solutions across multiple requests from different stakeholders


Provides report creation/debug assistance when required


  • Identify and define system errors and/or deficiencies

  • Use experience with SQL to identify sources of data inconsistencies, troubleshoot problems to root cause, and resolve issues when possible


Assist Performance Management department in defining and developing new Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and dashboards

Evaluate new technologies for potential implementation including development of business justification and project implementation planning, when appropriate

Build and publish interactive dashboards on Tableau Server. Manage and follow consistent analytics development lifecycle: dev/test/prod.

Work cross-functionally with Finance teams, IT Services, and System Analytics to collaborate on reporting solutions that involve clinical, performance, quality, and other operational data.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree required; Data Science-related degree preferred

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:


  • None required

  • Epic Certification (Caboodle, Clarity, Revenue Data Models) preferred

  • Tableau certification preferred


EXPERIENCE:


  • At least 3 years of experience working with large, complex data sets required

  • PL/SQL and TSQL programming knowledge required; experience writing SQL queries on large relational databases with multiple joins and using basic SQL to troubleshoot and validate data sources

  • Hands on experience with Tableau Desktop (dashboard creation, report authoring and troubleshooting, data source management) preferred

  • Experience with healthcare finance; understanding of key financial concepts and their relation to healthcare.

  • Experience with healthcare operations and basic familiarity with health data informatics, e.g. CPT, DRG codes, etc.

  • Experience in using Data Analytical & Visualization Tools (Tableau preferred)


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (KSAs):


  • Advanced MS Excel and PL/TSQL skills required; ability to convert existing queries and move them between environments

  • Demonstrated ability to turn raw data into actionable reporting and analysis

  • Demonstrated ability to work with members of management

  • Good understanding of DataMart/Data warehouse concepts

  • Excellent knowledge of calculated fields, parameter controls, hierarchy, groups, sets, dashboard actions, filters, annotations etc.

  • Good knowledge of Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW), dimensional modelling and design, Analytics, Enterprise Dashboard, Key performance Indicators (KPIs), Data Quality, Master Data Management and Data governance best practices

  • Required interpersonal skills to deal effectively with all levels of management

  • Able to communicate with ITS on our various data/server needs

  • Ability to build strong relationships across the organization and collaborate effectively with other departments both inside and outside Finance

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Detail-oriented and ability to learn and work independently as well as in a team environment
