DESCRIPTION Want to gain real-world experience and make a tangible impact on your community? The Public Works Department - Traffic Engineering is seeking a creative, highly talented, and motivated Engineering Intern. This internship will provide university students hands-on experience and on-the-job training related to their Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering degree. It also provides an opportunity for students to learn about government processes while applying classroom theories and concepts to "real-world" situations at one of the Inland Empire's best cities. The City offers a casual and energetic business environment. This position is required to work a minimum of 16-hours per week. This internship is year-round and may be modified every quarter. Workdays of supervising city staff are Monday thru Thursday, 7am to 6pm, so there is flexibility with the incumbent's school schedule. Traffic Engineering Division Specific Job Duties and Information The ideal candidate is pursuing a degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering with a desire to learn more about Traffic Engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems. The Engineering Intern position will help staff deliver on the City's Strategic Plan elements of Sound Infrastructure, and Safe Community by enhancing road user safety and optimizing traffic throughout the City of Corona Assist Traffic Engineering staff with data collection and analysis and respond to requests for traffic-related information and improvements from the public and other departments. Collect, summarize, and analyze traffic data, including traffic volumes, speeds, and collision history. Conduct traffic engineering surveys and evaluate traffic engineering reports and studies. Prepare detailed plans, exhibits, and work orders utilizing computer-aided drafting (CAD) software. Perform research in the resolution of traffic-related technical concerns and problems. Participate in studies related to traffic operations and traffic management. The successful candidate will be working under Professional Engineers and will gain valuable experience working on Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PSE) Packages, and assist in the operation and maintenance of traffic signals from Corona's cutting-edge Traffic Management Center in City Hall. Knowledge and Experience: Office administration practices and procedures; correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; City organization, functions and procedures applicable to assigned areas of responsibility; basic practices and terminology used within the Engineering division. Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent, current enrollment in a degree related program at an accredited college or university, and completion of one year of the required curriculum. Candidates who successfully pass the screening process and are deemed to possess the desired qualifications will be invited to interviews tentatively scheduled during the week of July 7, 2025. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a reference / background check including livescan and pass a pre-employment medical examination (which will include a drug/alcohol screening). The Organization The City of Corona is a General Law city operating under a Council-Manager form of government.
