SEMCO - Sr. Compliance Specialist (Utilities)

SEMCO Energy is seeking a Senior Compliance Specialist for our team! Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Pipeline Safety & Regulatory Compliance, this position will play a pivotal role in ensuring SEMCO's adherence to federal and state regulatory codes, including CFR 49 Parts 191 and 192.

This position requires a proactive approach to compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement of our operational procedures and processes, and provides strategic coordination and support for the Pipeline Safety Compliance and Codes & Standards programs across Washington Gas (WGL) and SEMCO Energy.

Primary Duties:

  • Support Codes & Standards and DOT Pipeline Safety programs across WGL and SEMCO, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and company goals.

  • Help develop and implement strategies to ensure compliance with pipeline safety regulations and internal standards.

  • Assist with regulatory inspections and audits (PHMSA, PSCs, etc.), including preparation, documentation, liaison duties, and incident response.

  • Prepare responses to regulatory findings (e.g., NOPVs, warning letters) and support development of corrective and preventative actions.

  • Lead focus groups to maintain and enhance Codes and Standards manuals across key operational areas.

  • Coordinate internal and external audit responses, including reporting, action plans, and follow-ups.

  • Analyze regulatory data and audit results to identify trends and support performance improvement.

  • Collaborate with Legal, Engineering, Field Ops, and other teams to implement changes for ongoing compliance.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert supporting both jurisdictions, fostering shared accountability for compliance.

Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 5+ years in pipeline safety, regulatory, compliance, or natural gas utility operations.

  • Strong knowledge of CFR 49 Part 192 and related regulatory environments (PHMSA, MPSC, etc.).

  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive compliance initiatives.

  • Strong analytical, project management, and communication skills.

  • Ability to interpret technical regulations for diverse audiences.

  • Experience with data analytics and compliance reporting.

  • Travel required within Michigan and the D.C. metro area.

We offer a competitive salary range of $82,000 and $118,750 per year for this position. Additionally, SEMCO is proud to provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
