Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Gillings School's Department of Nutrition is a global leader in research and training. We are the only nutrition department in the United States situated in both a school of public health and a school of medicine. We engage in innovative work that capitalizes on both these schools' approaches to health, and thus our department has an unusual breadth of scientific and policy approaches. Our faculty expertise spans from cell to society and moves from discovery to delivery. Our faculty and students work throughout North Carolina and reach populations in China, India, Malawi, Spain and the Philippines, to name a few. |
Position Summary |
The Research Project Manager will work under the direction of Dr. Anna Kahkoska, Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism.
The Research Project Manager will work closely with Dr. Kahkoska and her research team to coordinate and oversee all research and stakeholder activities relating to an externally funded 18-month study to develop and evaluate a Food is Medicine (
FIM) intervention augmented by continuous glucose monitoring (
CGM) technology for adults with type 2 diabetes and food or nutrition insecurity. This is a single-center 1:1 randomized controlled trial of 12 weeks total duration designed to test the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of the
CGM-augmented
FIM intervention. The project will run 2025 - 2026. This position is 100% grant funded and eligible for hybrid wok.
We are looking for a team-member who is passionate about improving diabetes care and support for people living with type 2 diabetes, with a focus on those who are underserved or impacted by the social determinants of health. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with nutrition and type 2 diabetes, including its treatments, nutritional management, glucose monitoring approaches, and consideration of psychosocial care and behavioral health. We seek an individual who will embrace the challenges of developing and testing innovative nutrition interventions and help our team strategize to increase the efficacy and accessibility of technology-augmented strategies. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor's degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Experience managing complex project milestones and project budgets.
- Experience working in academic research teams and/or environments.
- Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and responsive over email, with intermittent evening availability.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Candidates should have some previous experience working as a research project manager/coordinator, including interactions with study participants as part of recruitment and retention, data collection and management, and the regulatory aspects of clinical trials. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
- Registered Dietitian (RD) training and/or certified Diabetes Educator certification.
- Demonstrated familiarity with type 2 diabetes, including its treatments, nutritional management, glucose monitoring approaches, and consideration of psychosocial care and/or behavioral health.
- Previous experience with interactions with human research subjects in recruitment and retention efforts, data management, and/or regulatory aspects of clinical trials and/or nutrition studies.
- Previous experience with data management and reporting Familiarity with
EPIC, REDCap, and OnCore.
- Previous personnel management or leadership experience in an innovative environment. |
