Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Public Policy Analyst - Temporary. This is a hybrid position in our Washington DC office. This is a temporary assignment expected to continue through the end of the year; however, the duration is subject to change based on business needs.

We welcome college students graduating in May 2025 who are looking to begin their careers in a top-tier global law firm.

The Opportunity: The Analyst will have primary responsibility for the Finance and Fintech (FFA) practice group's public-facing publication, InfoBytes, and undertake other legislative monitoring and policy review work. Under the guidance of the Public Policy Senior Analyst, the Analyst will contribute to our current review of the department to standardize and expand existing services.

Our ideal candidate will possess a solid knowledge of legislative processes, legislative tracking systems and legal sources. Proven and effective communication skills - in particular, the ability to produce succinct, effective copy - is a key skill for this role.

How will I spend my time? You will spend most of your time on these responsibilities:


Responsibilities

The Analyst's primary responsibility will be to produce content for the FFA's public blog and newsletter: InfoBytes. By covering the development of consumer financial services, this will involve:

  • Monitoring, researching, analyzing and summarizing federal and state government actions, such as legislative, regulatory, enforcement, political and judicial developments impacting financial services institutions.
  • Monitoring, researching and tracking agency-specific enforcement activities.
  • Writing alerts, editing and maintaining the InfoBytes blog; and
  • Coordinating attorney reviews for the blog and weekly newsletter.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Conducting in-depth research and analysis of the impact of policy changes for our attorneys and industry.
  • Monitoring government, news and industry publications for regulatory and enforcement developments.
  • Covering and summarizing government agency events, as well as House and Senate hearings.
  • Providing equivalent support for other areas of interest to the firm, such as on privacy matters, artificial intelligence, data centers, etc.
  • Responding to ad-hoc research requests from multiple attorneys often with tight deadlines.
  • Assisting with other relevant tasks and projects on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications

  • At least two years of work or educational experience with research- and writing-based responsibilities
  • Demonstrated experience undertaking similar work in a similar environment.
  • Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to produce engaging, consistently high-quality and client-ready written output, with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent attention to detail, including a high proficiency in proofreading.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and working with PDFs required.
  • Competency in the use of key legislative tracking products and legal resources.
  • Knowledge of consumer financial services sector preferred but not essential.
  • A creative self-starter, confident in dealing with multiple stakeholders and assignments.
  • Flexibility to adjust hours to meet attorney requests and weekly deadlines.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is between $18.00 to $28.00 per hour
