Westwood Professional Services

Westwood Professional Services, Inc. is seeking an electrical studies engineer that plays a pivotal role in ensuring that the design of our clients' utility-scale renewable plants, including wind, solar, and battery storage facilities meets all local and federal requirements.

This role will focus on analyzing compliance with NERC standards by performing model validation and generator ride-through studies. As a secondary function, the role will also support renewable energy projects through the interconnection process by creating models, performing various model quality tests, and developing technical reports.

Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and validate power system models (in positive-sequence and EMT software packages) for renewable facilities, including solar, wind, and energy storage systems.
  • Analyzes engineering documentation and develops reports detailing facilities compliance with various NERC standards (FAC, MOD, PRC, etc.).
  • Serve as a NERC subject matter expert and provide engineering support to renewable energy project developers and generator owners.
  • Support project developers and owners through the interconnection process by developing interconnection models and completing interconnection applications for various RTOs (CAISO, NYISO, MISO, ERCOT, etc.).
  • Produce written reports conveying study results within the project schedule.
  • Coordinate with internal project leads and project managers, as well as external clients, owners, and related engineers (such as independent and owner's engineers).
  • Review the work of others performing similar studies to ensure product quality prior to client submission.

Required Experience

  • Approximately 5 years of experience in renewable energy and/or closely related power system modeling.
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, electrical power systems, or a substantially similar field having a power systems focus, from an accredited institution.
  • Experience conducting dynamics, short circuit, load flow, and/or EMT simulations including the modeling and representation of IBRs and other power system components
  • Experience with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards and requirements
  • Experience with the resource interconnection process, modeling guidelines, and requirements for various regions throughout North America (CAISO, ERCOT, etc.)
  • Experience using power system analysis tools, specifically, PSS/E, PSLF, PSCAD, and Aspen. Experience with DSATools (PSAT, TSAT) is preferred.
  • Experience in programming languages such as Python, R, and/or VBA is preferred.
  • Must be detail-oriented, with strong problem-solving skills and a commitment to quality.
  • Must be a supportive team player, capable of working effectively in cross-functional teams and managing relationships with external vendors and stakeholders.
  • Must have a positive and supportive attitude and be interested in being part of a growing team and growing into new responsibilities.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working efficiently independently.
