Job Description
Pay Range: $81,450-$101,825 per year Purpose of Position: The Chemistry Lab Supervisor is responsible for assisting the Lab Manager in the daily operations of the chemistry laboratory to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely sample testing in compliance with regulatory, customer, and company requirements. The position provides leadership for laboratory team members, assist chemists in maintaining USDA, ELAP accreditation, in developing and enforcing adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) that support laboratory quality, safety, and efficiency. Essential Job Functions:
- Oversee all chemistry lab daily operations and manage scheduling to ensure effective turnaround time and accurate testing of routine and special projects.
- Facilitates internal audits, non-conformance investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supervise, train, guide, and support laboratory team members. Sets goals with team members; identifies professional development needs; and coordinates cross-training team members. Evaluates team members performance and provides feedback.
- Coordinates with FSQA, Microbiology, R&D, Live Production, Feed Mills, Fertilizer Operations, Wastewater, and external laboratories to ensure test priorities, retests, and special projects are aligned and executed efficiently.
- Manage laboratory inventory, equipment maintenance calibrations/repairs, and hazardous chemical storage and disposal according to environmental and safety regulations.
- Maintain QA/QC laboratory program, data accuracy and traceability through Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), ensuring audit readiness and timely reporting.
- Assist in maintaining compliance with USDA and ELAP accreditation through ongoing documentation, quality system oversight, personnel competency records, and participation in assessments and proficiency testing.
- Performs cost analysis of lab testing, evaluating materials, labor, and throughput to improve efficiency and support budgeting.
- Ensure COAs are reviewed, approved, and reported to appropriate clients in a timely and accurate manner.
- Performs all other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the manager.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry, Biology or related sciences, M.S. preferred
- Five-seven years chemistry laboratory operational experience
- Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred, and laboratory/technical auditing experience preferred
- Training experience required
- Familiarity with USDA\ELAP accreditation
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to evaluate complex data set, troubleshoot results, and identify process improvements
- High-level organization, writing and communication skills
- Knowledge of poultry, food, and feed chemistry
- Proficient in LIMS use and data integrity practices
- Experience in compiling, trending, and interpreting lab data
- Strong computer skills (Excel, SAP and Business object)
- Must interface well with other members of management, business partners, and team members
