GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Patient Care Organization
1. Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population.
2. Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measuresappropriate to patient needs.
3. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests to assesspatients' clinical problems and health care needs.
4. Arranges for appropriate plan of care and follow-up based on outcome ofdiagnostic, laboratory, and physical assessment findings.
5. Performs laboratory tests appropriate for specific patient population.
6. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational andregulatory policies and procedures.
7. Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
8. Sets priorities for appropriate and efficient management of patient care thatreflects cost effective management of time, available human resources,supplies and equipment
9. Maintains interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patientcare information by discussing patient data with appropriate physicians andother health care professionals.
10. Incorporates the concepts of health maintenance, prevention, and promotioninto daily practice through patient education and counseling.
11. Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients,and families to effectively utilize them.
B. Quality of Care
1. Assists in the development, implementation and revision of nurse practitionerpractice guidelines and monitoring requirements for prescription writing incollaboration with prescribing providers and Nursing Leadership.
2. Evaluates outcomes of own patients' care and makes necessary revisions incare plans.
3. Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
4. Participates in departmental and organization quality improvement programs.
5. Utilizes quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patientcare.
C. Coordination
1. Demonstrates appropriate collaborative and consultative relationships withother providers within the institution and community.
2. Serves on Nursing and Hospital Committees and assumes responsibility fordisseminating and communicating information to staff.
D. Budget
1. Participates in setting productivity metrics and in cost effective managementof personnel, time, supplies, and equipment in his/her area.
2. Collaborates with the Practice Manager/Nursing Leadership in the recommendation of appropriate staffing patterns for theirclinical areas.
E. Personnel Management
1. Participates in the selection process of new employees in group or team practiceas requested.
2. Provides input into evaluation of other staff as appropriate.
F. Education
1. Acts as preceptor for nurse practitioner students and other staff as requested.
2. Participates in orientation of new staff.
3. Participates in departmental and organizational continuing education programs.
4. Identifies own learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skillsthrough formal and informal education and review of current literature.
5. Educates lay and/or professional groups through lectures, papers,publications, and educational materials.
G. Planning
1. Develops annual objectives and reviews with Nursing Leadership and the clinic leadership time of performance review and atappropriate intervals. Completes annual credentialing process through theNursing Department credentialing program.
2. Assists in determining, evaluating, and/or implementing clinical area goalsand objectives.
3. Maintains interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicatinginformation for patient care and operation of practice.
4. Maintains current knowledge of legislation that may affect the health caredelivery system.
H. Research
1. Participates in nursing research at a level consistent with educationalbackground and experience.
2. Maintains understanding of current research of others in related clinical areasthrough review of relevant publications.
3. Participates in grant writing as appropriate.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification/Licensure:

  • 1. Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) (or) DNP (or) PhD in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing required. Completion of a Master's or post Masters' degree accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).

  • 2. Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) certification required.

  • 3. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts required.

  • 4. Current authorization to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Massachusetts required.

  • 5. Certification by a nationally recognized accrediting body approved by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing

  • 6. Prescriptive privileges in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.

  • 7. Current APRN License to practice in Massachusetts Required.

  • 8. DEA license and a Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration number required

Experience:

  • 1. Minimum two years of Psychiatric nursing experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Required

  • 2. Current experience as a ILP independently managing a panel of patients, strongly preferred.

  • 3. Current experience with general psychiatry ambulatory patient population as ILP, preferred.

  • 4. Clinical experience working with adults and their families in various settings preferred.

  • 5. Experience leading a patient population care delivery model using clinical guidelines and protocols.

  • 6. Ability to work with various information systems, including electronic medical records like Epic.

Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Expert clinical judgement skills to function in the independent role

  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills tocollaborate with patients' families, staff and community health workers.

  • Ability to work with frequent stress resulting from busy clinical settings andchanging organizational climate.

  • Ability to be self-directive and demonstrate initiative in addressingresponsibilities of position.

  • Ability to utilize appropriate problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposureto communicable disease, and hazardous materials.

  • Fast paced administrative office d ambulatory settings as well as non-psychiatric settings

  • Frequent, daily use of computer, telephone, fax machine.

  • Occasional early or late meetings, including Internal and external presentations.

  • May require occasional work (phone calls, care coordination, patient questions/concerns) outside of normal business hours, including weekends.

Supervisory Responsibilities: May assume responsibility for providing direction to designated personnel.

Hospital Wide Responsibilities: These are required of all staff, regardless of the position. Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partners; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BWH and/or Partners, as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
